Guest wcseow Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 Hi, need some help What would u recommend me to buy, for a 37" or bigger Plasma or LCD TV?. Here is my situation a. Renovated a new condo, with feature wall. ID says TV should be 37" or more to make it look "appropriate" b. Am going to stay there for about 2 months and then going to rent it out. c. TV will stay, but as it will be eventually becomes mine I want to buy a "worth it" one. d. budget, not more than $3000 Got suggestions, other than AMOI
varun1624705824 Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Critical point: if you're going to rent the apartment out, along with the TV, ensure you do NOT buy a plasma. You have no way of knowing how well / poorly the tenant will take care of the plasma, specifically to what extent s/he will go to prevent burn-in. Else you're likely to get your apartment back with the TV carrying images of the tenants' favourite TV station logos, etc. If you were buying it for yourself, you know you'd be careful... - V.
Corona11 Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Build in the cost of the Plasma / LCD into the rental.

varun1624705824 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Today go to Gain City. Salesman says teh Toshiba 37WL66 model is availabale now at $3100. I went to the store at Plaza Singapura about a week ago and the sales guy looked up his price list and said about 2900. I called Parisilk - they called Toshiba who said this model will only be introduced in Singapore in mid-to-end June. Went to another Gain City store (this time, the guy quoted 3100) - I said, "okay, confirm stock and ship it to me" and he called later in the day to say "Toshiba says mid-to-end June". Went to Courts over the weekend and had them do a check as well - the guy came back to me saying "Toshiba says mid-to-end June". (As you can see, I've gone slightly nuts... ;-) with any luck, the guys at Toshiba will be thinking "hey, there seems to be a lot of interest in this set, let's get it out into the market ASAP!") ;D Bottomline: the set is not available at this time. Which leaves you with the problem of what to buy. If you want 37" and your wife doesn't have serious brand objections to Amoi (mine went, "I'm not letting an Amoi into my apartment!"), consider the 3-month old set someone's selling in the Planet AV Sales forum for 2500. Brand new is about 2800 - 2900 at BiG. Also look at the Sharp 37AX3M (not the "PAL-optimized" panel, though that may appeal to you as well if you watch a lot of TV) which is going for about 3800 along with a $500 FairPrice voucher ("but, honey, we're going to need the groceries anyway..."). If you can stretch a bit, consider the new JVC 37" DX5 (1200:1, 8ms, Clear Motion Drive, which interpolates frames between regular frames to reduce blurring) - this is listed at about 4200 at HN but should be around 3500 -3700 at Parisilk. As an alternative, look at models that are being discontinued and are therefore on promotion (e.g. the JVC 37" SX5 is $500 cheaper at HN). Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide. - V.
Guest wcseow Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Hi Varun, thanks. Will try to ask the stores this week and see whether they are shipping it faster. Interesting, my wife says "Why cant we get an AMOI into the house". When I say "ok", she says "safe or not"? So she was very interested when Gain Man says Toshiba pricing. Need to do serious thinking this week now Will let u all know
Corona11 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 wcseow, may I ask where and what type of condo you are renting and how much rent you are intending to collect? I have rented out residential properties for my parents before and sad to say the property is usually damaged beyond the investment $$$ put in and is certainly a loss situtation and that was in the booming property market of the 90s.....Reading that yours is a brand new condo, well renovated with ID input and you intending to put in a PDP is ringing alarm bells. I hope that you take this in a nice way...but I think since if you already going this route, I suggest you secure a tenancy before you decide on your purchase. I have seen many new condos rented these days, usually barebones with some basic furnishings, unless your property is high end and catering to the CEO market, even then no guarantees that it will be a happy situation, as the more they pay, the more demanding they become...renting a condo these days with barebones furnishing and having the selling point being the location to attract the tenant is the ONLY way to cut losses. As for me, my family have moved out of the residential rental market and are now into commercial......which is a different beast altogether......when commercial tenants rent, they are the ones who renovate and maintain your property as they need to upkeep the image for doing business.
Guest wcseow Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Hi Corona11 No worries, I appreciate your advise. The unit is not purchase for $$$ investment purposes but for my parents to stay. Unexpected things do happen and that may not be the case anymore for a while. selling it is out of q too. tks
