Guys, as above? This one I'm talking about is on a Compaq nc6000 notebook.

It's a 3.5mm headphone jack which supposedly doubles up as a S/PDIF jack.

3.5mm optical SPDIF jacks I've heard of... but electrical ones, anyone?

Seems like if I connect a mono 3.5mm phone jack to single RCA adaptor to my coaxial cable, it'll give AC3 (5.1) sound?

Connection:

Amp/Receiver (Digital In - Coax) ==> Coaxial cable ==> RCA-3.5mm jack adaptor ==> Notebook

Can anyone advise? Thanks.

Are you sure it isn't a mini-optical SPDIF jack? I read somewhere about someone with a laptop with a similar SPDIF/headphone combo jack, and they apparently found out it was a mini-optical SPDIF connector. Unfortunately I can't find that reference again.

Might be totally different, but I believe the new Intel Mac Mini's also have some type of combo jack, but unfortunately the Apple websites don't say much about it.

My Creative Dolby Headphone decoder comes with a 3.5mm plug that doubles up as both optical and coax.

The mini 3.5mm to RCA coax cable is bundled.

The mini Toslink optical to standard Toslink optical I bought from SLS

Pretty sure it ain't optical cos I can't see any light coming from within. Yes, just found out yesterday that mini 3.5mm SPDIF optical/headphone combo jacks exists... sort of a revelation for me  ;D

I have a headphone jack that claims to double up as SPDIF, so I'm setting to know if 3.5mm SPDIF also comes in another flavour other than optical. Like electrically, similar to coaxials... Thanks

Excellent! So do you get 5.1 sound with the 3.5mm jack - RCA cable?

Does the 3.5mm jack look similar to the one in here?

Sorry for the questions, just wanna be sure wat I'm looking for. Thks.

Yup, got a bundled mini stereo to RCA cable that looks exactly like that

Thanks, managed to find out that the SPDIF port is on the notebook's port replicator, not the notebook headphone jack itself. Dang!

You've been a great help! Cheers
