Viewsonic is still having offer for its 40" LCDTV same as the last computer show.

From yesterday Digital Life magazine, they also offer 3 years interest free for S$2,999 with 3 years warranty and it seems like a very attractive offer.

Anyone having Viewsonic unit care to comment about the LCDTV?

Don't go by these ratios - they're often artificial anyway. For example, real-world contrast ratios, as tested by the professional magazines, could be closer to 400:1 or 500:1 for most panels. See some of the reviews on www.homecinemachoice.com for examples.

As for the ViewSonic, HardwareMag, which is generally very favourable to its advertisers, basically implied that the Viewsonic should be avoided - from what I recall, their key issue was colour compression / colour banding. I think this was the Feb or March issue of the magazine. Then again, these were the same people who gave a 5-star rating to the ABSOLUTE RUBBISH BenQ 37" 1080p DCDi LCD (incredible specs, low price, but when you see the picture, you realize there's a reason for that low price... you also realize that specs are useless...)

Here's an excerpt from a review by CNet Australia:

"Particularly, colours appeared to be overly saturated and washed out, an issue that's most noticeable with warm colours such as yellow, red and orange. Skin tones are also unnatural by default, and it's difficult to detect fine details in darker scenes thanks to poor contrast performance at the low-end of the colour spectrum.

Thankfully, a little tinkering with the contrast, brightness and colour settings mostly resolved these issues, albeit an optimal picture is never fully attained. Yet for most users, the N4060W's lower price should make up for the drop in image quality, provided you take the time to tweak the aforementioned settings correctly."

I would recommend that you also take a look at Doggie Howser's review of the Amoi 37" 1080p for an interesting alternative. 2999 at BiG.

Hope this helps.

If you were responding to me:

funnily enough, 2999 is the 37". The 40" is cheaper (!) @ 2899. The 37" is a 1080p screen, while the 40 is 720p.

Best,

I think Viewsonic is a more respectable brand than Amoi. Physically it's also better!

Anyway, currently there is no other better models available for 40" LCDTV below S$3,000.

I think I will wait for Benq 40" which should be launched soon.

Best of luck.

FWIW, with 2nd-tier marketers such as Viewsonic (who, as you're probably aware, don't manufacture - they are a marketing operation that sticks their labels onto other hopefully well-designed products... others in this league being Palladine, Akira, et al), "brand reputation" isn't everything.

I'm not dissing Viewsonic - I know they market excellent computer LCDs. Just that the model in question has been reviewed as being sub-standard.

Again, best of luck with the viewsonic. Be sure to come back and tell us how it works out. Truth is, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and so long as you're happy with your purchase, really, that's all that matters.
