basspundit Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Hey folks need some expertise on this....when my ac is in economy mode....everytime it comes to life(blowing), my tv flickers...Is this what a power conditioner is supposed to solve? Oddly enough i don't hear anything from audio side stuttering, but my audio mains are on the opposite side of the room, where'as the tv's outlet is on the same side as the aircon? If I need a power conditioner what is a cheap and good one to recommend? Many gracias
alweek Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 seems like the motor of the aircon is causing interference. you can probably get the same effect if you have a hair dryer and plug it into a nearby plug and turn on. You can try to use a power conditioner which should help.. the only thing now is how much you want to spend..... I know that at Sim lim tower basement, there is a shop called convert & invert which sells AVR's (Automatic voltage regulator). Maybe you can describe to the guy your problem and see what he can recommend. I think they have a DO-POWER 600VA model which might be sufficient for your needs. Since we are not really sure if it is enough to solve your problem, maybe you can ask if you can try first and if no good can return? see how you go, i hope this helps. i use the AVR's in my job as i install medical equipment and sometimes we face weird problems with our machines due to non-ideal power conditions. i do not work for them! ;)
karlie Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Your TV outlet should not be on the same breaker as the air-con, but in terms of electrical circuit design I have seen funny ones in Singapore. This can easiliy be checked.
basspundit Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 Just did elimination testing....it turns out it wasn't the power supply causing the problem, it was the coax tv feed. It just so happens that the SCV point is near the aircon mains(is that the funky BIG turn switch thingie?). I wonder if its the proximity to the power lines that causes the flicker? I thought the coax cables were pretty well shielded... Watching dvds presented no problems so far. Anyway if its just tv i suppose i can live with it, barring the nagging thoughts that tells me i'm not getting the best reception possible. If i can't stand it i guess retrunking is always a solution :(
karlie Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Are you using SCV setup-box or are you connecting to your TV via the UHF/VHF (i.e. only free channels) via coaxial?
basspundit Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 The free channels, another room that has the SCV box exhibits strange noise spikes and picture artefacts when the air-con comes on....I think I may have to re-trunk the SCV cables from the hall again. zepp3lin Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 I did a seperate trunking for my AC cables and audio/video cables, don't run ac and audio/video cables in the same trunking. Another cheaper option is to install an AC noise filter in before your 3 pin and a power conditioner will further reduce it. For Ac noise filter you can check the detalis here : http://www.densei-lambda.com/products/top_link/index_nfe.html
basspundit Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 Hi zepp3lin, do you mean to put this right before the mains to the air-con? Or on the circuit path the AV stuff is on? Unfortunately thats exactly what's happening here......the coax cable shares a short path not in the same casing, but directly next to the air-con mains. Do i need an electrician to install the AC noise filter or is it consumer doable? Thanks! zepp3lin Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 No dont put it before your aircon unless its of higher rating 20amps or higher, put it before your hifi or before your power conditioner, u may need it more than 1 if its in lower rating for seperate source. This noise filters works best if you got a projector or a video source. So to make it simple put the noise filter before your TV if it's only about 10amps. If you know what is Live,Neutral and Earth is, than it will be easy for you, if you don't know hack about electricity than an electrician is needed. For your TV of Hifi you can get 10 to 16amps. Aircon or washing machine 20amps. Lighting 6amps.
basspundit Posted April 4, 2006 Author Posted April 4, 2006 Thanks for the info, that was useful. I know nuts about electrical wirings :)
