dew Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 planning to buy an LCD tv... anyone have any 23" LCD tv to recommend?
htfreak Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Most 23" LCD's do not come with digital inputs like DVI/HDMI, hence you may want to consider topping up a little and get a 26" at least. Taking the Samsung R series LCD TV to compare, the 23" is only about $200 less than the 26" but the latter comes with a HDMI input which will be essential for pre-recorded Hi-Def viewing in the coming year. Even newer consoles like the PS3 will support HDMI output.
dew Posted March 15, 2006 Author Posted March 15, 2006 hmm... not me paying so must adhere to a certain budget leh... so its most probably either 20" or 23"... anyway what is the upscaling to 720p thing? sorry newbie here
htfreak Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Actually all this terms like 480p, 720p, 1080i refers to the video resolution. The "i" and "p" at the end of the numbers refers to interlaced and progressive respectively. At 480p, you are talking about a resolution of 720 x 480 progressive. For 720p, its 1280 x 720 progressive while at 1080i, its 1920 x 1080 interlaced. Current DVD resolution is at 480i or 480p depending on your DVD player. High Definition resolution starts from 720p upwards which next gen DVD players like HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will support. However, these resolution will only be achievable on TV sets which are equipped with HDMI inputs as there is an additional layer of copy protection built in. Analog inputs like Component and VGA will only be able to display such High Def material at a lowered down resolution which is said to be around 960 x 540 which is half that of 1080i resolution. Hope this is not too confusing for you.

(Whether u can get a source that output HD in analogue is a different issue. For example Xbox 360 output 720p in component). It's the TV that may not be able to take the advantage of the higher resolutions. in any case, for a 23", it doesn't matter at all lah.
htfreak Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Ok lah.. If I have to state every possible scenario out there, I think the poor soul will get even more confused. However, I did use HD-DVD and Blu-Ray as examples in which to an extent this is true mah. For the record, you will still be able to get High Def signals for devices such as Xbox360 and Over The Air HD transmissions (Whenever Mediacorp decides to launch it).
