Need a new DVDP, cos my bedroom one is dying. Thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade the one in my HTR and move the existing one to my bedroom.

I would like the following features:

- SACD/DVDA compatible

- Multiregion

- good CD playback, excellent DVD PQ and SQ

- 480/720/1080 upscaling (via component cos my PJ has no HDMI) - additional HDMI would be good also for future display upgrade

- <$500

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Think under $500 hard to find all the features you want. Probably have to compromise.

Most of those that have video upscaling that I know of (e.g. Momitsu) don't have SACD/DVD-A compatibility. If you have DVI, can consider OPPO if willing to forgo SACD/DVDA. As to my knowledge, the low end Samsung players have HDMI but no SACD/DVDA, while the Pioneer players have SACD/DVDA but no video upscaling.

Guess you have to decide which feature more important, and which is maximised by your media + other items in setup. :)

Recommend that you buy one of those $59 players from Carrefour for your bedroom until your budget is around $1K. You'll be surprised how good the picture quality is compared to an ancient DVD player.

How's the Pioneer 686 for PQ and CD sound? Think I'll go for the SACD/DVD-A over the HDMI/DVI since my Z1 doesn't take either.

This player is quite cheap at around $250 IIRC.

How much is a Denon 1920 now and where to get? May go have a look to see if it's worth shelling out >$500.

$479 at KEC

That's pretty cheap for a 1920.

It's a SACD/DVDA player but unfortunately believe it only upscales via HDMI?

Pioneer PQ and SQ is decent lor. Don't expect much more for that price.

Having used a 686 and now a 1920, I would say the difference isn't night and day, even with upscaling to 1080i.

Will check it out. If this is true, it's the Pioneer for me!

At least for video wise. Audio wise I cannot tell yet as I've yet to really play CDs on the 1920 ever since going DAB.

Hehe the remote control response is a little retarded though....personally i prefer the profile of the marantz 6600....slimmer and more sturdy looking controls. going for abt 540

awesome price... oooh, i am feeling that upgraditis creeping in

you may also look at 2nd hand.  I believe a pio 969 2nd hand is not too far away from your budget.

Are u sure ?..no chance !

Anybody selling 2ndhand Pioneer 969 at $500 I want to buy ! ;D

i already have a universal player - the main reason for the upgrade would be a RGB scart output (my TV has RGB scart in). so does the Marantz - i know the profile looks great - have a SCART output that would put it in contention

as for the remote, hope its the remote itself which i can replace with the universal remote i'm using and not some inherent delay at the IR receiver

Oops can't help you there....didn't look behind when they brought the player here to test.
