simic Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 anyone managed to get dual amp to work while in 5.1 mode? i have disabled the surround back speakers and have biwired turned on. Speakers are wired in biwire config. dualamp and biwire lights turn on when in 2 ch mode. But the moment 5.1 kicks in, the dualamp/biwire turns off. There was a thread in avsforum where somebody claimed that dual amp still works in 5.1.... (becoz still have leftover amps from surround back channels) Dunno if its wrong info or not. Anyone got it to work?
DIRTRUN Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 manual says only stereo mode, no? Hiya guys, Have done it for a friend on stereo like Sirius says, don't know about 5.1 thou.... Dirtrun
Quest88 Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I'm using for bi-amping also. For stereo, both lights are on. Think when I switch to 5.1, only 1 light will go off, just not sure which is it. Will try tonight to refresh my memory.
zapp1624705742 Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 i think biwire will be on and dual amp off cos the amp needs to drive the rear speakers.
simic Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 For me, with stereo sources, I will get both light on. But the moment i switch to 5.1 source, both lights goes off. There has been some confusing info on avsforums, so thats why i want to find out if someone managed to get at least dual amp working on 5.1 sources. My magnepans needs serious juice. Need every amp that I can bring online. :)
Quest88 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Hmm.. tested last night just by pressing prologic button. Seems like mine also got both lights off. But sound is ok, so assume bi-wire is working (2 amps). Maybe that's just the way the lights work.

But if both lights are off, it means that only one amp is driving both HF and LF of the speaker. dual amp LED on = HF 1amp, LF 1 amp dual amp + biwire LEDs on = HF 1amp, LF 2amps
pcking1624705747 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 According to the XR55 Manual Pg.15 under the header "Enjoying BI-AMP Sound", it states that BI-AMP only works when input is analogue (excluding DVD 6-Ch) or a 2-channel PCM signal. So I guess that's the reason why the BI-AMP light is also off when the amp is in digital surround mode.
Quest88 Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Dunno how that works. Since it's tied to 2 binding posts, I thought that it should be a given that it's running on 2 amps at all times? Only when stereo can they channel 1 more amp to bi-amp.
zapp1624705742 Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 this was the main issue that i was pondering on when i was reading the XR55 manual before buying it lol...but it sounds correct so i just --- stop wondering and enjoy the music!

Only when stereo can they channel 1 more amp to bi-amp. in stereo mode only if you use single wire - its using 2 ampos (Dual Amp) if you bi-wire it's using 3 amps check out the FAQ area
Quest88 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I was just playing a dvd, and god knows why, 'dual amp' light up only, but it is stereo only I think (special features). Wonder why it triggered this mode.
SiriuslyCold Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 probably because you don't have PLIIx turned on permanently on the DVD input. also it seems the relays are auto sensing, so if you have a stereo signal it'll auto switch
Quest88 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Yes, but theoretically if it switches to stereo, it will light both lights because I'm bi-amped. But there's times when it only switches on the 'dual amp' light.
SiriuslyCold Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 its that relay no one knows about (how it works, what it is exactly etc etc) heheh
