DAVinci2015 Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 From: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#021406 2/14/06 Just a day after we posted information about the possibility of an extended edition of The Chronicles of Narnia coming to DVD... we're now hearing that Peter Jackson and Universal may be planning a King Kong: Extended Edition as well. Arnaud Calistri, the editor of the French DVD news site DVDRama, e-mailed me yesterday to say that Universal France has just confirmed that a deluxe King Kong "box set edition" is being prepared for DVD release in November of this year, and that it will feature a new edit of the film itself. France will also be getting the same two editions the studio just announced for release here in the States on 3/28, but not until August. We're working with our own sources to try and confirm this, but it definitely seems like a possibility given Jackson's track record with his Lord of the Rings extended DVDs. Stay tuned...

I just rcvd some more info on the "Extended Release". Apparently there will be a special boxset from Universal which contains Peter Jackson's extended KK as well as the original b&w movie as well as the Jessica Lange version. Kinda like the LOTR Extended Edition Boxset.

Guest anonb Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 any idea when it'll be released? ::) I'm not sure. There wasn't a release date indicated.
muscular27 Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Managed to watch the single disc (feature film) Region 3 version of Kong last night. Should be no diff from the 2 disc version sans the second disc of specials. PQ = Though cramped into single disc, the PQ is nonetheless very good with solid blacks. At times, the cgi shots really stood out like sore thumb (eg., rowing towards Skull Island). The sceneries in Skull Island is gorgeously rendered. EE is minimum. At times can notice pixelation during skull island scenes but not major. SQ = Major dissapointment. The DD track sucks imo. Not that there is no bass. There's plenty of it. The SQ not in the same quality I expected from the director of LOTR. It reminded me of the StarWars3 soundtrack which is soft on all channels. I was listening to Kong at my reference level (which I hardly do for 99.9% of movies watched) and I still found it soft (& I did dig my ears before tat ;D ). Looking forward to the extended version with DTS es or hopefully high def blu ray version. :)
Guest jonlee Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 The local R3 SQ also soft...had to up volume to ref-5, 5db higher than my norm. Gideon Posted April 2, 2006 Posted April 2, 2006 Saw the R3 version via HTPC, ffdshow, dscaler mpeg video via DVI to Marantz S3. PQ: 95% amazing picture resolution, natural flesh tones, beautiful scenery of the sea/storm/jungle, scary 'real-life' Kong etc. 5/5 SQ: Cranked up the volume to -6dB close to reference level and one of the best sense surround with 7.1 setup and realistic sound effect with full of bass. 5/5 Can't wait for DTS-ES version.
muscular27 Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I watched the Region 1 (double discs) last night and there is a difference in terms of PQ and SQ with the Region 3 version based on my setup, my memory and 3 particular scenes, i.e. fight with the 3 V-Rex, insect pit & Kong's last stand at the top of tower: Region 3: PQ = More contrast and hence, giving the picture a more 3D look. SQ = As mentioned in earlier thread. Sucks. Region 1: PQ = Color is much more natural with smoother look to it. SQ = Much better in terms of fidelity. I do not have to listen at reference level.

Jediknight Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 King Kong Production DVD when's this coming out? Any 4-disc version like LOTR on the horizon? saving my $$ for the ultimate version so giving the current one a miss. Don't want to be like those people who couldn't wait and bought the 2-disc FOTR only to tear their hair out in frustration when the 4and 5 disc versions came out a few months later. After that I guess most people wised up and waited.
Audio Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 I find this very disturbing. Why should there be a difference in quality between Region 1 and Region 3. Movie Houses are advising us about not buying pirate copies and all....but how do they expect me to pay genuine price for a Region 3 and accept sub-standard quality. I used to complain bitterly about my Region 3 "Eagles Live in Melborne"....Poor PQ, overscan part of picture at extreme left of picture...hash quality for high note...costs me $44.95. Saw the same thing at Muscular27's place , his DTS test version...EXCELLENT PQ, EXCELLENT SQ...like a totally different disc. Went to the US and paid US$19.95 for a Region 1 copy (cheaper than local) and now, I can say that this DVD is one of the better music DVD I got. No, I will not buy King Kong Region 3 or any other Region 3 from now on....................it's just like pirated copy at genuine price. The DVD people better clean up their act..... (Audio)

InnocentBlood Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 is that pic from Amazon Japan? it could be exclusive to the japanese market then...
muscular27 Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Do not have R3 but R1 should be what you have described ;D. There is lot of bass but this dvd gives more on Hot mid bass than deep . Yup..exactly....just not the deep bass we have come to expect from the director of lotr series. When the V-Rex roared, it's really puny compared to the T-rex's roar in jurassic park. ;D
ntuc Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 is that pic from Amazon Japan? it could be exclusive to the japanese market then... yes. but R1 has a similar version.
