@harrislp Thanks for that review. The problem being in WA is I cant test these speakers that I can find here. The reviews sound like what I am after. I was thinking down the line of Heresy IV but these are significantly cheaper and seem to deliver as much if not more than the Heresy. Again though I cant hear either of them for myself.

My situation is I am moving towns in a few months (sea change) and leaving behind my beloved 9m x 6m man cave. My system in there was built for that space and my younger more energetic partying days. Our new place the listening room will be much smaller 3m x 4m. Whilst I still like to rock out sometimes I am also very content to sit back with a single malt and run the gamut of music from folk, jazz and blues to metal. I am more a musicphile than audiophile. Whilst I love a great system I am not one to pick apart every nuance of a system or its sound. What I want is just to sit back and enjoy the music, get lost in it so to speak. From the reviews I have read and seen these KLH should fit the bill. As you said yourself "smiling and looking forward to spinning some tunes".

My music collection is largely FLAC. So going by what you said maybe a good Class A amp or valve amp/pre amp would help warm up the clinical sound ? Would a Class A have enough grunt for these speakers ? In my space I cant see me taking the sound over 90db ever, mostly in the 70db to 85bd max range.

Hi @SDB, sorry to hear about the loss of your man cave. I am also a music lover that doesn’t sweat the small stuff too much with my audiophile ways so I dig where you are coming from. To be honest the KLH sounds like an ideal speaker for you. I tried the Heresy IV and really liked them but the price was too much for me, and I did enjoy the more refined nature of the KLH in the end. I think the Heresy would be awesome in the man cave while the KLH has a bit more of a listening room vibe to me, I guess you would call it sophistication?

I haven’t tried a class A amp yet but would be interested to do so. The KLHs are not particularly hard to drive and are a lot less fussy than other speakers I have had so I don’t see why a good quality class A wouldn’t work well with them. I have used a tube preamp (Woo audio WA2, which is a headphone amp with a pre-out functionality). It definitely smoothed out the sound and gave it a nice kick in the mid bass area, but ultimately I preferred the sound with just the Brio for the most part, with Electronica being the only exception.  I am mostly an old school country and indie rock listener though so take that with a grain of salt.

As for the listening levels, I listen at around 75-80dB most of the time due to environmental and familial constraints and I have to say that the KLHs really liked to be turned up to get the best out of them. When I get the opportunity to crank them is when I really get the most enjoyment out of them. If you listen at low levels a lot I would definitely recommend looking at some horn speakers, they really shine in that environment. Having said that the KLHs will play really well at low levels, I just always want to turn them up when I get stuck into the music.

Overall I would say that you are spot on in saying that these are musical speakers meant for enjoyment, not for overly critical listening. They are easy to place, will work great in a small room like you are moving to and are great for the types of music you like (jazz, folk, blues… haven’t tried metal on them though).

Hi Geoff, is that demo pair still kicking around in Sydney, or have they winged their way back to Melbourne?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have just listed the new walnut KLH fives on my website.

They arriving during mid - late September.

I've listed them to be pre ordered and have created two buttons

One button to order outright and the other to place at 20% deposit.

The stock is limited as are the production runs.

I have quite a few backorders already but there is enough stock for additional orders.

There will also be new stocks of the West African mahogany.

I hope you don't mind me posting on this thread as I am a KLH model 5 owner and dealer.

Hi Geoff, Your web set up is perfect. The 20% booking fee and the additional discount is perfect. I ordered the West African Mahogany. I'm thinking if I should also buy the white linen covers.

Would you have a few coming? Thanks Zoran

I’m a proud new KLH owner. 😃

I managed to win these in Hey Now Hifi’s Instagram comp. They arrived on Friday and had a very brief listen to them on my iPhone. They sounded pretty good.

Finally had a good play with them today hooked up using Bluesound Vault 2 into LH labs Geek Pulse S Infinity dac. Streaming hi res from Qobuz and also music stored on the vault.
I haven’t been exposed to many high end headphones but I’m very impressed with these. They easily outperform my Sennheiser Momentum’s and Sony WH 1000 XM3’s. Instruments sounded clear and floated in space with plenty of separation, vocals seemed true to the main system and with some bass heavy Tool and Deadmau5 they really thumped. I’m going to leave them running for a bit and see if they burn in.
Beautifully boxed and presented and I think they look stunning and are very comfortable to wear.

Hi Ben

I've obtained further clarity on the arrival of the KLH Speaker shipment.

The shipment is landing in OZ on October 4, then they go through customs and are couriered to the Melboune warehouse ready for shipping.

As soon as i see them arrive they pre-orders will be fulfulled.

I've also heard that over 33% of the order is pre-sold.

If any one wants a pair..

Here's the link.

Rega Brio R, Rega RP6 with Exact cartridge is what I’m running currently. Have listened to so many records in full since setting them up.

I am genuinely surprised at how much the model 5s have opened up since burning in. Seems like there is more detail and definition to the instruments. I revisited the records I first played just to double check and there was definitely a difference. They make music very engaging and emotive. Very happy with my pair. I will probably move up from my brio r amp eventually but even using that to power them seems to work surprisingly well.

Fantastic to hear!

My Model 5s turned up on Monday and I'm really enjoying them so far.

If I had to list the two things that I felt were a little lacking, they would be it, so I'm thrilled to hear that developing for you.

Things that have really stood out to me:
a. Awesome soundstage, with pinpoint centre imaging. Not the widest and deepest, but it's definitely there.
Some songs the M5's almost disappear.
b. Textural, fast, defined and punchy bass. Not as loud ported, but way more enjoyable in my opinion.

c. Voices have exceptional tonality and detail.

They sure look good and build quality is great... not amazing.
The veneer is continuous around the cabinets but the finish isn't as good as it could be IMO.

Not too fussy with placement. Got them 180cm apart. 50cm from back and side walls, toed in.

I've read/heard/watched some different experiences about 40w being enough through to really liking power to sing but in my experience, from 80w to 300w solid state, I like them best run with 15w of tubes. YMMV?

I gotta say drums sound very convincing too. I have moved mine closer to the wall and spaced them further apart but like you said they are really easy to place; I can’t say I noticed a dramatic difference having them further away from the wall/ closer together.

I’ve personally found late 60’s and early 70’s recordings to be the ones where there is almost a tangible quality to the sound. Some songs can bring a tear to your eye through the model 5s.

Hopefully they open up for you like they did for me. I played a copy of Terry Riley’s a Rainbow in Curved Air very early in the break in and that definitely made the speakers disappear.

I just listen to records but have a chrome cast if I want the radio on, I have no plans on upgrading it because I’d rather buy more records. I was surprised how much better the chrome cast  audio sounded through the M5s though with no external DAC.

Break in period of 100-150 hrs made a diff for me and pairing with the amp is exceptionally important for this speaker .
Pairing with Marantz , tubes or similar produces best result.
