I must say I'm a little suprised.

Audio enthusiasts that don't take each component of it cones, remove it from it's shelf or platform, Clean the chassis, then do all the connection terminals on the rear panel. Finally clean all the contacts on your power cords ( as these corrode the quickest) then put it all back again.

I remember a guy with a Krell pre amplifier who brought it in to adjust the phono capacitance settings internally. While I had it I cleaned all the contacts and chassis sockets.

He rang back afetr a brief listen asking what other modifications I did while the lid was off.

I unplugged my speakers (banana plugs) and put them back and was pleasantly surprised by the more immediate sound??

Hi Grumpy,

I frequently pull stock in and out for evaluation purposes, but the system gets the once over from top to bottom about three times a year to maintain performance.

Good tip re pipe cleaners Tony, not a problem for me being a pipe smoker, another thought, I also use bristle pipe cleaners at times, as the name implies these have tiny wire bristles and should to my way of thinking do an even better job, what do you think?

Hi Jon,

I have used cottons for years, but you should check on a mirror surface if the contact cleaner lifts the adhesive on the cotton bud and leaves a residue before using on your valued equipment.

Another thread months ago suggested the pipecleaners which do seem a better option to me. I'm picturing the colored felt style with the wire wound centre.

Point being regular maintanance of the contacts on your gear including the AC cords will ensure performance over time is not degraded.

Sometimes its the simple things we overlook in the audo system and just take for granted that can ensure quality playback.

Anyone using cheap $5.00 power boards get rid of them and install something with decent contacts. Tony C

(Anyone using cheap $5.00 power boards get rid of them) that would be me  Can you explain why?

Pipe cleaners sound like a good option they can be cut to length with scissors, leave no residue and a packet would last for years.

Hi Jon,

Give it a shake sometime, or better still dismantle one and have a look inside.

Poor quality contacts often poor secured, Grounding is poorly executed, cables to wall often light guage. Better quality contacts make better surface area contact with the AC plug and generally use heavier and higher quality contacts. You will hear the difference. Tony C

Thanks Tony, any brand recommendation? seems most available are of the elcheapo variety.

David,

Jaycar carry the Caig products, you can get a kit with Deoxit

and Pro Gold and some brushes etc.

The Deoxit is applied first and cleans, the Pro Gold is applied after cleaning

and is a protective coating.

Sounds a bit like a cut and polish. :)
