Snoopy8 Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 A new version of SnakeOil OS has been released. https://www.snakeoil-os.net/forums/Thread-Snakeoil-Installer-1-2-0-Gear-Isolation If your computer can install Ubuntu or Raspberry PI OS, it can run SnakeOil OS. Never heard of SnakeOil OS? It is software for a music streamer that delivers excellent sound quality (SQ). It has different servers and players including Logitech Media Server (LMS), Mpd, HQPlayer, MinimServer etc. You can even set up a Roon end point or a Roon server. Made in Australia (Perth) and sponsored by Sublime HiFi (thank you @JDWest). Please give it a try. It is free, but a small donation will open up even more SQ tweaking capability. 4
Me2also Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 I think Ill give that a try Snoop. It looks interesting. ATM I've just got my PC (mainly TIDAL), into a Feinii and an old 55w Luxman 308 SS integrated amp into a set of floor standers (QUAD 22L2 or Electrovoice Interface). Im likely to switch to Qobuz soon and Id also like to get a seperate and purpose built music server. Ill try to do that on the cheap: put in $600 or $700 and assemble a pc with decent speed, isolation and power supply.

Suggest running Logitech Media Server (LMS) as your music server; it has Tidal, and Qobuz plugins.
Jovan.s1987 Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Am I right in assuming Snakeoil is like Plex Server? If so, which apps would you suggest work best with it, to stream out local music?

It has a web based music player and you can use phone apps such as iPeng (iOS) or Squeezer (Android).

SnakeOil comes with a number of music servers and players. LMS is one of them, probably the most complete server, including access to Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify. https://www.snakeoil-os.net/wiki/Configuration/music-players
MattyW Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) Mmmmmm, this has me curious about running it in a virtual machine on UnRAID for Roon Server use..... I've a sneaking suspicion that it will prove more reliable than running Roon Server in Docker as I currently do. Would be fairly lightweight as far as virtuals go and have it's own management interface. I like this Edited May 26, 2021 by MattyW 1
Gordon Macfarlane Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Hi Snoppy , been running Gentoo player for a while now and think it sounds great but have had reliability problems relating to network issues and am interested to try SO. Just got clarity ,I am using a PI 4 ,will SO run on the pi 4 and do I use a 32 or 64bit version of the underlying operating system?

Install the standard Pi image first, then use the 32 bit ARMV7 installer from here https://www.snakeoil-os.net/forums/Thread-Snakeoil-Installer-1-2-0-Gear-Isolation
Gordon Macfarlane Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Hi Snoopy , by standard pi image do you mean 32 or 64 bit?

Gordon Macfarlane Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Is it ok to use the lite version of Raspbian?

PKay Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) @Snoopy8I just saw that there is a new version of LMS 8.2.0 - do you know if it works with an earlier version of Ubuntu? As you know I'm running on 32 bit architecture so I can't upgrade Ubuntu versions. I am on 16.04.7 Edited August 8, 2021 by PKay

JPete9 Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I know the post is old but yes, it works fine on raspian lite. Install raspian, run the remote install script and voila! PKay Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Snakeoil has taken my old Antipodes up to another level. Well worth trying out. 1

Paid up and activated I am using LMS and Squeezelite. With the Material skin looks great and it brings the streaming services together so nicely (not apple). Works just as good from your laptop and ipad and phone. I am not buying a streamer anytime soon when i can do this so easily. 1
PKay Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 (edited) sorry if this is a bit OT but I was wondering what version of MPD Snakeoil users are using? My latest is 21.25 but looking at the website they are upto v 22.10 I am on a 32 bit i386 system. @anewmission @Snoopy8 Edited August 11, 2021 by PKay

But is that a problem? There are small sound differences between versions but nothing that compels an upgrade. Am on 22.09 released with latest SnakeOil update.

I suppose the problem is knowing that 22.09 exists and it could be even better. It's good to know that there is nothing that compels an upgrade. I am on the latest version of LMS which is fairly easy to do using SSH and following simple instructions.

There is unofficial Ubuntu install for 64 bit. But you have to do your own 32 bit install, not trivial... 1
