A bit of an older device. I managed to score an as new Toshiba HD-XE1 HD-DVD Player in its box for cheap. It had Ver 1.2 installed but i managed to find an Aus Firmware update Ver 2.5 which installed ok so now have 1080P/24 output. Still no True-HD Bitstreaming option. Been looking for the last firmware update Toshiba released which looked like Ver 4.0? Anyone have it or can point me in the right direction for it to suit an Aus HD-XE1? Another issue i find is that if i plug via HDMI directly into the TV it works fine(tried on a couple) but if i plug it into my main system via my Integra 60.7 then into my LG OLED...I get nothing? The switch on the front panel is set to HDMI and HDMI Output is set to 1080P/24. Tried different HDMI Cables, still the same. Read they had Handshake issues with these older players?. Will probably have to input direct to the OLED and ARC it back to the Integra.

I've got 4.0 as an iso file. You'll need to rename the file extension from pdf to iso (did it to get around site restrictions on file types). Please let me know once you have it, as I'll edit and delete to avoid using up 40Mb.

Have some vague memory this can be due to 1080i vs 1080p - try switching. If that doesn't work it may be mismatched colour space settings.

Hi Quark and ARIKIP,

I too am now looking for the last firmware update Toshiba released Version 4.0?  My AUS Toshiba HD-XE1 is currently running version 2.7.  I understand the image needs to be burnt onto a CD before running the update on the HD DVD player.  I am based in Auckland.

Sorry, the site is blocking me from uploading it, even if I rename it with an acceptable file extension.

No worries Quark!  Thanks for the quick response.

Hopefully ARKIP can burn it to a CD for me and meet me somewhere in Auckland?

  1. The PDF file renamed ISO, does it have to be copied to a CD first before loading it in the player and downloading the update to version FW 4.0 on the player?
  2. Or can you download ISO file from lap top hard drive directly to the player via Ethernet cable?

I thought that might be the case. Is it possible to email the PDF extension and I rename it ISO before saving to my hard drive before burning it to CD?

My ISP limits email attachments to 10Mb - the ISO is ~40Mb.

That is a large file (40MB). Large files (PDF or otherwise) often fail to retrieve properly.  Back to the drawing board.  I will need to get hold of it on CD.  Thanks!

Did a retro [sort of ] search mjones for firmware notes and apparently its 2.8 the one that introduced bitstream lossless 7.1 [ earlier versions just decoded into lpcm iirc]

What does this update do?

A1. This firmware update adds support for 1080p/24Hz output and auto mode to the HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players. For the HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A20 and HD-XA2 players, it adds more on-screen language display options. In addition, this firmwQ1are update improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web- enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba. In addition, this firmware update provides High Bit Rate Audio functionality for the HD-XA2 player. When integrated through the HDMI connection to a 7.1 capable multi-channel A/V receiver, High Bit Rate Audio has the potential to offer the latest in high definition surround sound.

If you want to risk a few dollars ; hddvd revived.com let me input address details for a firmware👌 and they sell one off discs too it seems

Thanks cwt. I did send them a couple of messages and awaiting a reply. Will try them as a last resort. FW 4.0 fixes playback issues, freezing, certain error messages (M55 G) and rectifies the not loading of all HD DVD issues hopefully!

Do you guys use this player for dvds as well as hd dvd? Any other use?

If you didnt have a good bluray player the Silicon image hqv reon chip is still state of the art 👌

I only wish that tosh could have held it together  long enough for those 2x usb expansion ports to be useful. I reckon they woud have piggybacked a hdd full of downloaded h264 files and put sony in a pickle 🤦‍♂️
