Soultone
This should go in the great buy on ebay thread, but this almost deserves a thread of its own. What a bargain basement price.
Townyj
In that sort of condition i can see it reaching well over 6 grand or more easily.
Monkeyboi
In that sort of condition i can see it reaching well over 6 grand or more easily. Well IMHO they are far from mint or even very good condition. When you take a close look at the blurred photos in the auction it may prompt the question of how the corrosion and damage around the screws occurred in the first place, considering the Seller is claiming they have never been used or out of the box except to photograph them for the auction. The photo of the screw attachment to one cup of the headshell is even more telling. The screw looks okay but the cast metal frame looks badly corroded. Okay, so they are 20 years old, BUT I've got older headphones that have seen a lot of use and are in better condition. If the outside is corroding, it makes you wonder IF they still work to original specification and IF corrosion hasn't set in in other places which may stop them from working at all. Cheers, Alan R. jrisles
OMFG ... these things sold for more than $7K!!!! I had heard of the headphones but i had no idea just how expensive they were. Man that is alot of money for a pair of headphones .. just for a pair of headphones .. think about it ... and it really begs the question why hasn't manufacturers been able to get a comparable sound in 2009 .. these were released onto the market 20yrs ago ... or is it a case that there are some headphones out there today that are better than these but these have now just got a cult following? Guest
Hey Jrisles - it does seem like a huge amount of $$$!!!! I guess we can think of many examples through maufacturing history where the producer just gets it "right" for some reason and then the item obtains "legend" status. I cant comment on these in particular having never hear them but if they are the true "king of headphones" and rare or hard to get hold off then I guess $7k is not that silly if you think about the price of say the new Senns. Not my cup of tea but I can see how it happens. Hell look what Garrad 301 get

The Malaysian gentleman that purchased them backed out after the auction had finished, evidently he was concerned about the fact that they were advertised as NOS when infact they showed considerable signs of wear. He was posting about them over on Head-Fi,it seems the seller just accepted it. Edit:Sorry he was from Thailand,Below was his last post dear all, I decided to cancle my bid and inform the seller with the reason that I'm not sure weather this is NOS as he mentioned or not? surprisingly, he never reply and just disappeared! not even give me bad feedback or any word. I think this kinda strange and I feel like I made right decision not to take this deal. Thank you all for your kind comment and help. kim Edited June 29, 2009 by ford Add information
jrisles
Hmmm ... sounds bizarre. But the seller had a few other unique bidders that he could of made a 2nd offer too? jrisles
Thats funny cause i subscribed to this thread i got an email in my inbox and clicked on it thinking perhaps another pair of R10's were up for sale. Then i realised the contect of my email was spam. You mods are quick having deleted it so quickly. So i may as well contribute whilst i am here. Ok.. Soultone you must shop at expensive locations .. you can pick up a pair of 701's for about $400 nowadays if you shop smart. Half of what you are prepared to pay for them. cableconnoisseur
$1699 for an audiolab 8000CD? Wow someone is getting ripped off. I paid $850 new. Yours is obviously not the 'Made in the UK' version; as those sold (RRP) for close to $2K new, back in the '90's. I have an 8000 DAC (UK Made) that also cost $2K new (RRP was 900 GBP). These prices were before Audiolab was purchased by the IAG and now have their components manufactured in the far East.
