Which Crowded House OG?

I have the UK original and the Aussie. The Australian one is poor, thin and insipid compared to the UK. Never heard the US release but from my experience of US release albums in the latter half of the 80s they are often nothing to write home about.

Just A/B comparing the self titled debut and the remaster. I'm not familiar with most audiophile terminology, but a layman observation would be...

The original is a bit looser in the mid range, possibly a bit crisper in the top end. Bass is nice and tight.

The remaster is tidy, polite, not as in your face, but lacking somewhat. Certainly listenable.

To quote my wife, the original is more fun, makes you want to get up and dance. And so we did.

Hope this helps a little.

Edit- the original projects the left over craziness from Split Enz much better.

Which OG were you playing?

I have nothing to compare to - but I have an original Australian pressing of their self titled album.  Yes it's physically thin vinyl, but I don't think the sound is thin :).

Just playing on my new cart right now to confirm...............yep confirmed.  Sounds great - not the last word in bass, but vocals and instruments sound excellent.

So, Chris, you think the sound is thin??

If an old album is pressed on 120 or 130 gram vinyl, that doesn’t mean it is in any way inferior to 180g vinyl. 180g and 200g vinyl that have appeared in recent years are nothing more than a marketing tool.?

I seem to recall from another thread, that you have a Rega P6........what cartridge did you upgrade and to what?

Cheers,

Keith

I’m sorry I meant to say the sound isn’t thin.

And yes plenty of 180g and 200g out there that’s very ordinary these days.

You’re right I have a P6, and I recently upgraded to a Kiseki Purple Heart :). After some early hiccups - now very happy.

Hello Chris, yes, I could see what you were trying to say, but the way you wrote it didn't actually say that!

I found the 180 and 200 gram vinyl, especially early doors, were prone to dish warping, but that does seem to have been corrected somewhat with more attention to good QA.

That Kiseki is a very nice cartridge indeed and should be a really good match for your Rega tonearm. What cartridge did you upgrade from to the Kiseki?

Cheers,

Keith

Yeah sorry sometimes my head and fingers don’t connect too well ?

I’ve learned not to pay any attention to the weight of a record and just listen to make a judgement these days.

I had a 2M bronze on prior. That was a great cart for the money too.
