SOLD: Weston Acoustics - Topaz 6CA7

Recommended Posts

Further information:

I bought this amp new from Earl (October 2016) so have been the only owner. Never thought I'd sell it, alas I want more music making gear and covid has smashed my job so here I am. The tubes are original, they have held out well and I have been happy with the sound thus have had no reason to change them.

So for anyone who would like a Topaz 6CA7 and not wait the time for one to be made for them - then here's your chance.

I still have the manual/specs layout that Earl supplied with it somewhere as well.

I am presuming anyone reading this knows about Weston Acoustics - If you don't then check his amps out. They and the gent himself are excellent!
All 4 inputs are line only - I used a phono preamp for my turntable.

My preference is not to post this amp - It weighs 20kg, I don't have adequate packaging and I would be gutted if anything happened to it in the post. However, if someone interstate wanted it and was able to organise a courier service I'd be open to look into that as an option.

The amp is in great condition, it went from Earl's workshop (boxed) to my car then to my shelf and has sat there till I took it down and took these pics.

I'm happy to answer any questions should anyone have any.

Hi guys - Ive had feedback suggesting my asking price is too high, which surprised me considering how good these are and how commercially sparse they are (asking price is $495 less than current price for a new one).

So I am curious, what is a better valve amp option for this price or a just as good one for cheaper? Genuine question as I don't know about ALL valve hifi amps - a lot of my music enjoyment is via instrumentation so I have not delved too deeply into hifi valve amp world.

** if this is going to cause ripples, then admin do advise and I'll happily delete this comment - I am just curious and happy for respectful discussion.

cheers

It maybe because they have not, as of yet, realised that Earle’s amps have recently ?! increased in price, for example, The Troubadour is no longer $1,000 it is now just under $1,500, I hope that clears up any misconceptions over price.

You get to sell your stuff for as much (or as little) that YOU deem necessary.

Earle makes great amps, not cheap amps.

Maybe someone wants you to sell them a great & cheap amp.

This amp has always sold for way less than what it should even new.

Keep in mind that new amps are around 2200 so that may also be a reason why people under value this gem.

I think these are a gift from Earle and worth 1800 for sure.

I love mine and it sits in a stable with ARC, Radfords, MF .....

Your price is already a bargain. I paid $2200 for my Tempest and feel like I  won lotto, it's so good, especially with new GL kt88 tubes on board.

I sold my Weston Acoustics Topaz 6CA7 for $1800 earlier this year. I'd bought it from Earl in 2008 - a great valve amp.

John

That is good to hear John - I was PMd several times by a member today suggesting a more suitable price would be around $1000.. and as convincing as he was 'trying' to be, his reasoning just didn't win me over - these are visually and sonically beautiful amps.
Anyways, It looks like it is going to a good home tomorrow, and conveniently 10 minutes from my home.

As the saying goes, says more about the folk not knowing the value of an Earle creation, and the import of exactly what that means.

Secondly, the only thing that is different from new are the valves.  So, hello?  {edit - unless Earle has improved technology in those few years.  Happens of course from time to time, but turkeys might also look forward to Christmas}

There is a third thing, but its a bit nuanced.
