Mr_Gadget Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Hi, I recently acquired a Marantz AV7704 and tried to do the Audysee setup. I had to lower the subs gain as expected but once I had finished the first position it said Subwoofer None. Any idea what's going on?
Quark Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 (edited) Audyssey can be a PITA - there's a fine line between turning the sub(s) down low enough so it's not complaining about them being too high low, but loud enough for Audyssey to sense them. Also, make sure you switch the subs to On, not Auto for the calibration. I'd also suggest you spend $32 for the Audyssey app so you can turn off mid range compensation (a dip) - IMO vocals are much clearer with it off. Edited November 7, 2020 by Quark Fixed typo 1
Mr_Gadget Posted November 7, 2020 Author Posted November 7, 2020 I aimed for 75db for the subs but perhaps I need to go as high as I can without it going into red. I ended up using my Denon Audysee mic and I had to turn the sub gain up. It managed to get through the setup. Weirdly, volume seems very low now, on TV and Disney app. Need to crank the volume up for any decent output. Doesn't seem right to me. I haven't tried a blue ray yet though. 1

I usually crank them right up. 1

Agree, try a blu-ray - TVs and streaming can be all over the place - Disney is known for their "don't scare the kids" sound.
jamiebosco Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Audyssey aims for a FLAT frequency response - to most people, not listening at THX Reference Level - a flat FR in the bass region will sound anemic. I would turn the subs up 3-6dB (or more) in the Channel Level section of the AVR. Are you using Dynamic EQ ? - it may also help Make sure Dynamic Volume and Audyssey LFC are both OFF 1
Kaynin Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 1 hour ago, Mr_Gadget said: Can please explain this a little more? Audyssey adjusts the volume levels for your speakers, but you can also alter the level of your inputs (source levels in the manual). In the menu system where you choose what input is for each connection, so CABL/SAT or DVD or GAME etc., you can select analog or digital for example. You can also set the volume levels too, so crank them up. Should be page 200 of your manual. Default is 0dB, I go to 12dB, which means your master volume doesn't need to wind up as much -
Mr_Gadget Posted November 8, 2020 Author Posted November 8, 2020 (edited) The tv input source level cannot be changed when HDMI Control is ON. Bluray level is on +10 (probably set by previous owner), I still haven't tried it post Audysee calibration. I should get my hands on a manual. Is it download only these days? My Denon 4311 came with a nice thick manual and a second remote too. Edited November 8, 2020 by Mr_Gadget
Kaynin Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 (edited) If it's second hand then I'd do a factory reset first, secondly any firmware updates, then finally set it up for yourself. I never let HDMI control anything. Causes more problems than what it's worth. Edited November 8, 2020 by Kaynin 2

Mr_Gadget Posted November 8, 2020 Author Posted November 8, 2020 Also when ARC is On the source level can't be changed either.
Quark Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 When you run the Audyssey app and turn off mid range compensation it sounds a lot louder IME.
Mr_Gadget Posted November 8, 2020 Author Posted November 8, 2020 Thanks guys, I'll need to wait until I have house to myself and reset AVP, then run Audysee again. Then I'll get the app. Does Audysee need to run again when using the app? 1

I always do 8 sweeps - definitely gives more consistent results. 1
Mr_Gadget Posted November 8, 2020 Author Posted November 8, 2020 Right, get app first then. Thanks. 1
hopefullguy Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 the 4311 manual is possibly the worst thing ever put on paper (i have one) the audyssey set up should be done correctly http://www.willowville.net/ht/Audyssey Setup Guide.pdf no idea about apps as i use old gear but you dont actually post any of the settings achieved, your speaker/sub set and room environment. a bit difficult to comment on audyssey with out knowing all the variables.
Mr_Gadget Posted November 13, 2020 Author Posted November 13, 2020 Just a little update, I used the app to run Audysee again and I always seem to have issues with the subwoofer detection. Seems I need to try a few times before it works. Anyway I got through the process and uploaded to the AVP I also turned off the mid range compensation settings on all speakers. Has anyway created the '500hz curtain' profile as described by Youthman on Youtube? I have created it but haven't tried it on the AVP. I am very happy now and don't feel the need to upgrade any audio components any time soon (big statement!). I would have to say that the biggest improvement I have had to my system has been upgrading my subs. They are just effortless and I don't feel like I need to increase their levels at all after running audysee (but I will probably fail to resist temptation ) I feel like the logical next step is focus on the visual end of the AV spectrum. Perhaps 2021 is finally the year of the projector for me! Perhaps my LCR need changing to match the rest of my Krix speakers? Haha. 1
Mr_Gadget Posted November 13, 2020 Author Posted November 13, 2020 One thing that does irk me though is that there is a bit too much noise coming through the speakers, I have a suspicion that it's related to ME24 being used as a HT bypass (it's access switch has been modified to act as a bypass when in the down position.)
Kaynin Posted November 13, 2020 Posted November 13, 2020 Irritating, could be a few things. I had that with some banana plugs I was using. Took me two weeks to identify that they were the culprit. I threw them out, never to be used again.

Thanks for sharing, I'll investigate this when I get a chance, it's not noticeable from my seated position but just one of those things that shouldn't be happening.
