Wow, I never knew he was so prolific.  I'll Spotify the top 5 and give them a listen.

I only know Harvest, and love it.  Is it a fair call at #17?

Hi All,

All very subjective, as most of these 'lists' are, interestingly many of the 'lower ranked' albums are from 2000 onwards.

I’ve always liked Harvest but would never put it near the top. So for me #17 is probably reasonable.
....and I agree that Harvest Moon is much better

Fascinating to see Le Noise so far up. Although I love it I thought it was not so loved by the NY fanbase at the time of its launch.

Dont see how you can put rust never s;leeps at 1 and 2 other crazy horse albums at 2 and 3 and then Psychedelic Pill at 23 , sure the songs all sound the same but its a really good song!!

Not a bad effort at ranking Neil's albums IMO.

As for their top 10 listed; I would get rid of "Time Fades Away" (7) and "Comes A Time" (10) both of which wouldn't make my top 20...... and insert "Ragged Glory" and "Le Noise" to make up my fave 10 albums.

Not fussed about the order, but EKTIN would be my No 1.

Thanks for posting this, I'm happy to see On The Beach in the top 5. It's quite probably the most played album in my collection.

I came to this one only quite recently. It’s certainly high on my NY playlist these days.

Yes and no

The problem with Harvest is that the records before and after up to and including Zuma are so good that Harvest got lost in the shuffle of much better records

I’m in agreement with them on the top 6. Although would shuffle the order depending on my mood. I think they are being a bit harsh on Harvest and would have it at 7 myself. Let down by a couple of songs. Man Needs A Maid and Are You ready For The Country are a bit annoying.  But Words, Alabama, Out On The Weekend and Harvest are great songs. And Heart Of Gold and Needle and the Damage Done probably just suffer from over exposure.

Very much agree with this, Harvest was my introduction to Neil back when it first came out and love every track, me and the misses have a deep attachment to that album. That said EKTIN and After the Gold Rush are jointly his best albums (IMO of course) Rust... would be well down the list, never got into it. Got six of his albums, maybe a couple more are in order.

Neil Young is my favourite artist and own more of his records than any other artist.

He keeps releasing records and I kept on buying them but in the end I'm running out of room so while I have lots I don't own them all.

It was 1991 and I got Ragged Glory on CD and from then on I was hooked.
Prior to that I did not really take much notice of him.
Next one that got me in was Comes A Time from 1978, so different to RG but still fabulous in a different way.

Anyone that attempts to rank Neil's album certainly has a near impossible task.

Interesting that Weld is not in the list, this is Neil and Crazy Horse in full distortion mode.
The live version of  Cortez The Killer (from Zuma) is monumental!

I recall reading an interview with Neil and he talked about how important to him the order of tracks on a record was and that the listener should play it in order. I totally agree, his albums are best listened to in order all the way though.

I have so many fav NY albums I would bore you listing all of them. :-)

The best way to listen to Neil Young is on his Archives if your computer is hooked up to a sound system

Every piece of music he has made is on there and more added all the time

$20 a year

Can’t beat it and very high quality sound

Site is clunky

Just like you imagine Neil to be

Can't understand why - Live Rust doesn't get a mention, absolutely brilliant and that's with CD, same as Sleeps With Angels. I have to get both on vinyl.
