Inspired last night by some background music on Queen's Gambit on Netflix, while they were in Mexico City, I have decided to have a Herb Alpert theme.  Just searched my database, and I have the albums listed below - plus a Reader's Digest set of Tijuana.

Gotta admit to always liking this stuff...

Fiesta Herb Alpert
The Best of Herb Alpert
The lonely bull Herb Alpert
Whipped cream & other delights Herb Alpert
America Herb Alpert
Viva Mexico Herb Alpert
The Brass are Comin' Herb Alpert
S.R.O. Herb Alpert
Vol.2 Herb Alpert
Herb Alpert's Ninth Herb Alpert
The Happening Herb Alpert
The Beat of the Brass Herb Alpert
Ole! Ole! Herb Alpert
Going Places Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Bras
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass
Tijuana Brass Vol.2 Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass

Tijuana Taxi - awesome.  Also love me a bit of "Rise" as well.  Got a pile of Herb Alpert vinyl at a charity shop and they always get a spin while I'm working.

The bonus is they are mostly quite well recorded and even though the records are often well played when you get them secondhand,   they can still sound great through today's better systems.

Just put Ole! Ole!  on - and the big start is the John Law's theme - El Presidente

Love "Tijuana Taxi"...instantly lovable tune and never get tired of hearing it.

I have a few of Herb's LP's and they have great SQ... believe he's the "A" in the label "A & M"...

All of the LPs in that pile were heavy and in great nick - sleeves unfortunately a bit damaged here and there and the manufacturing quality seemed to drop off in the 1980s (no more super shiny sleeves).  This one is almost perfect, sounds fresh as a daisy, minimal surface noise, great sounding album.

South of the Border was basically on high rotation at our place when I was growing up. Still love it.

Strange  how under appreciated he is, I mean he founded A&M records, that alone should stand as testimony to his talents. Introducing his take on the Mariachi sound to the world,  5 American number one albums, signing so many artists , these are great achievements in anyone’s language.

OMG....Herb Alpert

I remember my father playing HA when I was a kid. I had forgotten about that until I read this thread.

Lonely bull was my favourite.

Anyway, carry on and enjoy if it's your thing.:)

I'm in your camp, Whipped cream FFS is the most bragged about album on certain FB audio forums - that I avoid as a consequence! ?

I never understand the logic of members popping into a thread just to poo poo the topic/artist, happens way too often. If you don't like it, move on, no one cares about your opinion.

I don't mind having listen to Herb Alpert, although I don't own any if his records. It's great as background music especially when entertaining guests.

My folks used to play a lot of his records when I was a kid. When they passed away , they were the only ones I kept. I have a greatest hits CD as well.

My parents had several of his albums and played them frequently. It's funny, happy, catchy sort of music.

I quite liked that later Rise thing where he seemed to perform in a new genre.

I noticed a secondhand record store treating it as Jazz.  I sorta get it.  Latin rhythm alternate versions of well known "standards" along with some originals.

Wikipedia show the following genresd for the album:

Pop, Jazz-funk, Dance

The jazz-funk thing seems to fit and is in keeping with the record shops judgement.

I have always thought that his rendition of This Guy's In Love With You is the standard by which all other versions are to be judged, and they're always found wanting by my estimation.

The Casino Royale soundtrack is also an audiophile benchmark. My late ex-father-in-law loaned me his copy for a couple of years. I remember  putting it on whilst a doctor carried out a life insurance health check on me, back in the early '90's. He remarked that the music had "a beautiful tone".

Herb may have his detractors but he has produced, on his own and in association with others, some great music in his time. And some not quite so great, but that can be said for just about anyone who has been around for as long as he has.

I recently bought a copy of Herb Alpert's RISE album (CD) recorded in 1979 and remastered by Bernie Grundman in 2015. Fantastic music. Judging by the list of backing musos on the cover the Tijuana Brass were probably there too in 1979. As a kid Whipped Cream was the order of the day on our HMV Console Stereo so I'll try to track it down online. Turning 70 on Saturday so this really takes me back.

Cheers

I have memories of buying Dad a copy of the Zorba the Greek EP - which he absolutely loved. It helped get me off the hook after buying The Beatles 'Collection of Oldies but Goldies'. These were my first ever records back in about 1966...

Herb Alpert was a favourite of my father's, and while the family relationship with my father was strained at best, this music still brings back fond memories of my childhood. Spanish Flea and Taste Of Honey are stand out memories as a child. An album which brings his music into the 21st century is Whipped Cream And Other Delights Rewhipped, where a number of DJs have tastefully worked over the tracks.

Here's a couple I haven't seen mentioned. North on South St. I believe was recorded when he and Janet Jackson had a brief moment in time and is a good party record and Second Wind, a Jeff Lorber production in his smooth jazz style.

Yep .. I like, a bit of tragic, and I was into Latin Dancing competitions when I was a teenager so luv' most things Latin music.  Herb was one of the few artist recordings on my fathers Toshiba 'Reel to Reel' along with the Seekers and some orchestral pieces ?

Quick scan of my digitized collection and I have brought more albums and CD's over the years than I realised ?

herb alpert - definitive hits
Herb Alpert - herb alpert's ninth 1967
Herb Alpert - Second Wind
herb alpert - the beat of the brass
herb alpert - what now my love
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - best of
herb alpert & the tijuana brass - greatest hits
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965)
Herb Alpert and The Jeff Lorber Band - Live at Montreux 1996
Herb Alpert Blow Your Own Horn
North on South St

Plus of course Herb Albert was instrumental in the release of the sublime, beautifully engineered and Grammy award winning Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66

yes @aussievintage I remember from my childhood....  Restaurants, my dad played it... seemed it was around everywhere for a few years at that time in the 70s.... . And yes, not Jazz, but not funk, hard to categorize. Love those horns!
