sputnick42 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi, Here are some options I'm weighing up at the moment. Please offer some advice as to whether or not these products are any good...I've tried searching online for opinions, but haven't had much luck. Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum or thread. http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...AdIdZ296602019 -- Goodman Speakers for $120 http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...dIdZ286292289# -- Denon CD player DCD-700 $10 (broken...how hard/how much to fix it up?) http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...AdIdZ296158029 -- DB Dynamics $100 speakers http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...AdIdZ293383683 -- vintage amp and speakers $30 http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...dIdZ291844242# -- all for $90 http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...AdIdZ290950271 - $40 http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Stu...AdIdZ287335493 -- $50 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-MARANTZ-turntable-TT351-/170666230607?pt=AU_Electronics_Home_Audio_Turntables&hash=item27bc80034f -- $30 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220811042400&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Technics-SL-B210-33-45-rpm-belt-drive-turntable-/260811224515?pt=AU_Electronics_Home_Audio_Turntables&hash=item3cb98f75c3#ht_500wt_1156 Thanks for any advice you can offer...I just desperately want some working gear to play my LPs!!! Cheers, Nick
sputnick42 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 Your gumtree links don't work mate. Bugger, didn't realise it just went to the homepage. Would it be easier to just ask what products/brands/models i should definitely AVOID?
Paul Spencer Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 On a really tight budget, you could get started on the DB dynamics speakers. Perhaps pick up an AV receiver on ebay and a new working DVD player $100.
sputnick42 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 Thanks Paul. I'm looking more on the music side of things, so is an AV receiver my best bet? Or should I be looking for a 2-channel amp instead? I've found some ok looking Marantz and Denon gear on ebay so far. Hard to know what to get in terms of TT though, because I don't want something that is so cheap that it could damage my vinyl.
mnSNA Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi Sputnick42. For LP's you want a stereo amp, speakers and a turntable. It's probably easier to mention how much you wish to spend on the venture, then seek advice on the possibilities rather than the other way round. It's just a thought, but it might also work out better to spend a bit more on speakers (for example) to begin with, and upgrade other components later. With a budget in mind I'm sure someone here can help. Slow and steady wins the race....well, sometimes anyway.
Paul Spencer Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 The only reason I suggest an AV receiver is that they are so easy to get hold of cheap - more of them out there. Sure, an integrated amp is fine as well, just depends on what deals you happen to come across. Up the budget a bit more and you can pick up some new Wharfedale diamonds, a very popular choice.

So will an AV receiver still allow me to run a TT through it? @MinnieSNA - I only have about $200-$300 to throw at it right now, but with a view to upgrading in the future when finances allow. That's why I've ben scrounging ebay and the classifieds. Thanks again for people's help
Benje Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 sputnick 42 many receivers will have a specific phono connection, and ground wire connection. They include the pre-amp necessary to hook up a phono. On some (not all, some) recent receivers, the phono turntable connection has been removed from the features. Don't get one of those. The input connection will be labelled 'phono' and should be visible on the rear of the receiver. Benje
Paul Spencer Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 See what you can find - when a deal comes up you can always look up info online.

sputnick42 Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Righto, here's where it stands so far: I'm going to look at an Akai AP-D30 TT for $50, Technics amp SA-101 & Marantz speakers for $90. Will just use my DVD player for CDs for now I reckon. I know they are not great (especially the TT), but it's a start. Wish me luck!
sputnick42 Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Just came across some Chadwick speakers. These cabinets have 3 speakers each: 30 cm, 10 cm and 8 cm diameter with 60w max input for $30. Worth getting or not? Anyone have any experience with this brand or product? The internet search isn't finding much info Cheers
sputnick42 Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 The owner said they were an Australian manufacturer, reputable in the 80s
sputnick42 Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Righto...just picked up my first hi-fi system all for the price of $50. Akai AP-D30 TT JVC 4 channel amp 4VN-880 Akai basic looking tower speakers It is basic, but it works! Cheers for the help and advice so far. Pics will be uploaded when it's all up and running nicely.
skippy124 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Hi, Will be interested to hear your opinions of the JVC amp (I have a JVC MCA-V7E 4 channel and its a nice amp). If you are interested there is a user manual for the 4VN-880 available for download on hifiengine http://www.hifiengine.com/manuals/jvc/4vn-880.shtml You have to register (free) to download. Cheers John
pete_mac Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Nice work! You've managed to score a quadrophonic amp! 4 x 25WRMS/ch from memory. Quite cool-looking with the four meters too!

pete_mac Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Yes, 4X25W, and can be switched to 2 channel mode with approx 50W per channel Ah!!! That's a really nice feature to have (from memory, your MCA-V7E doesn't have it?)
skippy124 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Ah!!! That's a really nice feature to have (from memory, your MCA-V7E doesn't have it?) The MCA-JVE also has this function, (4X12.5W or 2X25W). To the OP, the JVC 4 channel amps are relatively scarce, you got a good deal!!!
pete_mac Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Ah, cool. For some reason I thought it was lacking this feature. Good stuff
unclemack Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Sputnik, That amp looks terrific. Good pickup. Worth working your system around that. Even if you upgrade the amp, keep it as a cool retro statement.. Nice work mate. M
sputnick42 Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) AWESOME!!! Glad it played out this way...cos it was by pure chance the guy selling the TT just said off the cuff "Oh yeah, you can have the amp too if you want?" I'm trying to work out what I need to set the "phono pick up load" to - either 100k ohm, 47k ohm, or 33k ohm. Trying to google it, but if anyone knows, please let me know. I have an AKAI AP-D30 TT with an RS-90 stylus/PC-90cartridge. From playing around with it so far, a few of the VU meter lamps don't work, and I can only get Channel 3 going for speaker sound. I'm gonna get my father-in-law to help with some tinkering (he's an electrician), but if anyone in the Adelaide area is keen to help me fix it up, we could make a day out of it (although I can't promise much sound quality out of the rest of my system). Cheers everyone p.s. It came with the manual, and also the circuit board diagrams too. Edited July 14, 2011 by sputnick42
