wixy Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Why isn't anyone buying this !?!? This is a $2,500 amp that's massive in size, weighs a heavy 22kg, has inbuilt mm/mc phono, beautiful appearance (both outside and inside) and most importantly sounds great with a smooth top end for solid state.
Dogbert Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 This is a nice piece of kit at a great price. I was all set buy it before the wife had a melt down at having another amp in the house! Good luck with the sale HiFi Fan
peal Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 That is sooo tempting. I've been looking at the A-S500 as that is closer to my price range. In Brisbane as well. Just not sure if the wife meltdown is worth it!
Tapet Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 A-S2000 here that is vitualy the same as the 1000 and no complaints. Fat clear sound but maybe a little on the brite side, it is very accurate, neutral to warm speakers with this amp are the go tho. Thing is built like a tank, a well crafted one that is.
Dogbert Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Peal don't know how you could resist being in Brisbane, much closer than me. The meltdown will be worth it, I sold my gear a while ago when we moved house to build and this was the perfect replacement, timing just a bit wrong as we still have 6 months before we move in..

Just not sure if the wife meltdown is worth it! Far be it from me to encourage marital disharmony but if you are sure that this is what you want I recommend stretching your budget a little to accommodate it. Amps last a long time and the little pain endured now will be forgotten in the long term. Do your economising somewhere else to fit it into your budget. You only live once (and of course die once if you upset the wife too much). Edited July 22, 2011 by Telecine
Bus_Boy Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Peal I agree with the above comments. The 500 is a great little entry level amp, but the 1000 is in a different league. For the small difference in price it's one big difference in performance.
peal Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) I'm still tempted, but just went down to my local Hardy Normal store & actually found a salesman who is a 2 channel enthusiastic. Will sell me a A-S500 for $600. The extra $380 for the A-S1000 is a bit hard to get pass the financial controller. Edited July 23, 2011 by peal can't add up - extra $380.

Bus_Boy Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) If he was a REAL enthusiast and you told him about the S1000 he would have sent you away. Edited July 23, 2011 by Bus_Boy

speedgod66 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 a miracle i found it! September 2008 HiFi News has the review it received an editors choice award -the sound quality was 82% "quite a bargain" The amplifier has the following tested performance A-wtd sn 0dbw 90.1db,100w/110.5db dynamic power of 80hm, 155w,4ohm 290 w,2ohm 280w,1ohm150 w. Not a bad word to be said about its performance
peal Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 This article gives it 4 out of 5 stars, and the A-S500 5 out of 5 - but bang per dollar determines the star rating I guess. I have no doubts that the A-S1000 is a much much better amp. http://www.whathifi.com/Review/Yamaha-A-S1000/ What I do wonder about buying any gear second hand is what warranty cover you get. Yamaha has this in their warranty - "However, our warranty excludes: Products purchased from someone other than an authorised Yamaha Music Australia Audio Visual dealer." Do you just go to the repairer with the original receipt and pretend to be the original purchaser? Or is this clause just intended to exclude the grey market imports?
Bus_Boy Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 As far as I am aware the warranty lasts it period if originally purchased through an authorized seller. The difference between new, and 7 months old on an amp is literally nothing. In fact the small amount of usage can sometimes be in your favor. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the reviews to be honest. Editors are picky and everyone has different tastes. Best thing to do would listen to the amp yourself

hififan Posted July 23, 2011 Author Posted July 23, 2011 Finally got hold of a cyrus amp last night (borrowed off a friend) to compare with the yammy through my audiovectors and have decided that with female vocals and acoustic guitar the yammy is better as it is fuller sounding with the cyrus expressing a little more inner detail however certainly leaner and thin sounding by comparison. The real difference is when I put some pink floyd on and the yammy was a mile out in front with its bass control and depth and huge sound stage.... I have now decided to keep the yammy and hence the sale is now withdrawn, thanks for all the interest and comments..... just goes to show that personal taste will always prevail over someone elses review
