nzdans Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 (edited) For anyone who's ever even slightly enjoyed Don's work whether it be with The Muttonbirds, Front Lawn Or Blam Blam Blam you simply must come. For anyone who's curious as to what good stuff is on offer from the other side of the ditch, as above you must clear a space in your diary for the 30th. Don is one of the greatest musical talents NZ has ever been lucky enough to share. Don's gig will most likely be a solo act and seriously about as good as solo acts can possibly get.For a bit of background check out Don's Wiki page or his Own site The Northcote Social Club is by far our favourite of Melbourne's more intimate venues and has never disappointed us with superb sound and the ability to stand right in front of the artist (if you can beat us to it!).Tickets are $20 plus $3 booking fee or $25 at the door for any who may want to try their luck at the last minute. Don plays music from all of his bands and actually has a great stage persona, you're sure for a giggle or two. To whet your whistle I'll let Youtube lend a hand. We have 2 SNA members confirmed and one awaiting clearance so please check out some of the below and give this gig a consideration. Don will most certainly have his euphonium (or its smaller sibling) and possibly a trumpet in tow and does excellent live sampling, looping etc. The below is an example although last time we saw him at the NSC he also sampled his guitar loop on this song so he could strum along with himself: Some tracks from Don's solo albums: Now to start off from near the beginning of Don's career: Excuse the AWFUL sound quality... Admire the album art... Looking forward to seeing you there!!! Edited July 11, 2011 by nzdans

nzdans Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 Another bumpage for what promises to be an excellent and most affordable gig at a sweet Melbourne venue; I'll shout a beer to any SNAers that attend!

brownemi Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Cool thanks. I used to go the dee why hotel all the time in the 80's and 90's seeing all the good Aussie acts ie Sunnyboys, spy v spy, oils etc. Even saw Buzzcocks, Smithereens and many overseas bands in the old glider bar. Ahhh those were the days!
nzdans Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 Don will be playing from 22:20 to 23:50 tonight, if anyone makes it look out for a tall bloke (and his short wife) near the front in an orange Melbourne Jeep Owners Club T-shirt, come and say gudday; the offer of a cold beverage is still open...
nzdans Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 Don was in fine form tonight playing to a very appreciative audience, Michelle got some pretty good phone vids so I may post up later; her iPhone beat my HTC Mozart hands down in sound quality - doh. We were absolutely stoked that we decided to go a bit earlier than usual as we picked all of the support act; Andrew Keoghan. I'd not heard of Andrew before and am instantly a fan; this guy is an industrial strength looper (Don's words) who plucked a fiddle a fair bit and looped layer upon layer with his Buckleyesque vocals and Stratocaster. An effect I hadn't come across previously was a pedal to drop his Strat down to bass guitar level with great results. The video below was Andrew's last track which was infinitely better live as he's now polished it a fair bit with great vocal loops as well as bass lines from his fiddle and some excellent bow work - WOW! Anyhoo Andrew and Don play at The Basement in Sydney tomorrow, I simply could not recommend this gig highly enough. Not sure if it helps to add credibilty to these ramblings; I attend nearly all of my gigs sober with tonight being no exception. I should also mention Andrew and Don did team up for 'Anchor Me'. We're ecstatic to have stumbled across such a talented artist with an awesome voice. We met Andrew after the gig as Michelle wanted to grab his set list, sweet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUFq8-xUu3Q
