progladyte Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 O.K. O.K. so I'm late to the party and have only just discovered Elliott Smith. (I don't do radio very much and don't stream either so guys like this are going to pass my ears unless I delve deeper). But, man am I glad I took the punt and ordered a couple of his CD's. This guy is fantastic. Any other fans? J.P. - Figure 8
kdoot Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 I find it hard to listen to his music these days... since he stopped making it... Bloody genius though.
metal beat Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Prog. Better late than never. All his albums are great. My fav is either/or -just so beautiful. Before he went solo, his band heatmiser is also excellent, but a bit rockier
progladyte Posted July 9, 2011 Author Posted July 9, 2011 Thanks T/T - I intend to grab a few more of his / his bands soon.
progladyte Posted July 9, 2011 Author Posted July 9, 2011 If you like Eliot - try the Silversun Pickups. Reading some reviews even as we squeak
4heckssake Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 yep. I'm a fan. got all his solo stuff. have a couple on vinyl. either/0r is my favorite too.
metal beat Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 If you like Eliot - try the Silversun Pickups. I have Carnavas and have never thought of Elliott Smith when listening. I will need to have another listen.
houdinifangs Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 +1 either/or on vinyl. Elliot Smith is the only artist my partner has converted me to from her collection. I bought her a nice 180g pressing as a present but I'm the only one who puts it on. She wants me to put her CD version on her iPhone.

I had never heard of his band. Listening now and it sounds great.

Hang around here for long enough and we all learn some new music and spend more $$. All available on vinyl too Jake. I have the first two, however I see the 3rd and final album - Mic City Sons is being re-issued later this week!! Added to my checkout.

I'm not much a fan of the first two Heatmiser albums though. As for his best album; this is currently my fave:
metal beat Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 (edited) I'll buy Mic City Sons too. Thanks Shane. I'm not much a fan of the first two Heatmiser albums though. As for his best album; this is currently my fave: Yea, must admit it took me multiple listens to really get into Heatmiser, and on first listens very similar to a lot of US bands in the early 90's. Interestingly, XO was the first Smith album I bought in 98. Then backtracked. That is the joy of music. Discovering not nessarily new music, then going up and down the catalogue. Try grooveshark.com for a great free site for listening to tunes. And yes... I was a streaming novice until last year. Chris

I started with XO and now have the whole discography - a fantastic artist. Didn't know about heatmiser - will have to check them out.
~Spyne~ Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I also would never have linked ES and Silversun Pickups... But yes, ES is a fantastic songwriter.

THOMO Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 You might also like Denison Witmer. Not as dark as Elliott Smith but there are similarities.Another great songwriter. The album Are You A Dreamer is great and very well recorded.
Wotton Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I think that if you are like Eliot, you should try the Silversun Pickups. I have no more suggestion for you. regards
progladyte Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 Thanks Wotton - I just checked them out now.
