Krispy Audio Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 I'm after some bookshelf speakers to replace my old floorstanders (B&W DM6s). I've auditioned a few brands now including Xavian, Dynaudio and others, but the best I've heard have been these Studio HDs. They seem to be the only bookshelves I've heard that would be quite capable without a sub, capable as in not resulting in me missing the lower frequencies compared to my outgoing speakers. With this in mind, are there any other speakers under $2.5k I should be auditioning, or would these be the go? I can't seem to find too many reviews or feedback on them online. My requirements are something the wife won't scoff at (hence the sale of my DM6s!), so a subtle size and look, and will be paired with a Meridian 551 amp. Cheers.
vmhf Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Heard these a few times and must say was very impressed. Exquisitely detailed and they sound very big. Extremely efficient means can go with almost any amplifier and sound good. If you like the sound then just go for it I say. Today heard a pair of Spendor SA1's at HIFI Trader. I would have to say the best small speaker I have ever heard. Utterly transparent, supremely detailed and creates an absolutely holographic image. They are also jaw droppingly good looking. Your wife would love the look and sound. The Meridian 551 would be a great match too!
Krispy Audio Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Ha I was there today as well! Didn't listen to anything, but might pop back with some CDs and LPs to hear these things. Thanks for the tip.
vmhf Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 The Spendors are definitely worth a listen even if slightly above your budget. Don't expect the bottom end authority of the Legacy Studios but the sound is so sublime that you sort of forget of this shortcoming. Keen to hear your thoughts when you get the chance mate. BTW, whereabouts did you demo the Legacy's? Were they around the $2500 mark? Last time I heard them they were closer to $3500 although that was some time ago now. I think late 2010.
Krispy Audio Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Pymble Hifi. They are only $2150rrp, sounds like there's some room there if/when I'm ready to negotiate. I also auditioned some nice Xavian speakers but....as you touched on.....were light-on in the bass region. I'm not averse to running a sub, but if I can do without I'd prefer.
vmhf Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 At that price I can't think of any standmount speaker to compete against the Legacy Studio HD. Perhaps others may be able to bring a few more suggestions to the table.
