dastrix Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Hi Guys Does anyone know roughly what the import tax/charges are for importing? Would it be roughly 15%? 10% for gst and 5% for associated fees? Looking at some speakers in the US Cheers
mnSNA Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I'm pretty sure that's about right, 15% or thereabouts for stuff over $1,000. It's easy to call Customs and check just to be on the safe side.
Orpheus Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Yes, 15%, unless you can satisfy them that the speakers in question were made in the United States, which means either; fully manufactured in US, or fully assembled in the US from a mixture of US and foreign parts, in which case you will only have to pay the 10% GST, but not the 5% import duty. I think that GST and customs duty is charged on the total cost including freight. In addition, there will be a relatively minor impost if an agent (as would be the case with FedEX) facilitates your customs processing. Freight will be the biggest additional expense with speakers.
Tax Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 IIRC, it was 5% duty on the cost of the item, then an admin charge of around $50 then they add the postage cost and then charge 10%GST on this total. Even with the made or assembled in the US items you need some corresponding certfication documentation. Not sure whether this has changed now.
