Keith_W Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Summary of the video - They deal with "Cross Zero Distortion" with a "DC Flow Circuit" - which makes the music "float on a steady energy stream". Sounds a lot like Class A to me But those heatsinks look awfully small if it's a 150W Class A amp ... makes you wonder where the bias point is. - Battery power for the preamp with filtered power supply for the mains - One massive cast aluminum piece forms the base to combat microphonics <-- looks very impressive! Amp weighs >40kg!! Some questions though: - How much NFB? - Why do they persist in using SS amps for their marvellously efficient horn speakers? I mean, that's a 150W amp!
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted June 27, 2011 Volunteer Posted June 27, 2011 - Why do they persist in using SS amps for their marvellously efficient horn speakers? I mean, that's a 150W amp! maybe they realise that you can't have too much headroom! Disclaimer: I run a 500w amp into my 97dB speakers.
bhobba Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) Looks interesting. But not exactly full of precise technical detail. And from my recollection they generally charge a bomb for their stuff. Of course the final arbiter is how they sound but having heard amps around the price point I think this thing is likely to sell at (9000 Euro I believe which I think would equate to about $15k Aus) I can't say I can really hear enough of any difference to justify the price over and above the amps I have. Indeed I have done a direct comparison to a $20k amp and a little $3k valve amp. To my ears they were equally as good - the $20k job had stunning bass control and power, but you know what the little valve amp actually was more transparent in the mids to the point I rated it a tie. As far as SS amps go many people think an LFD is about as good as you can get and it sells for significantly less. Thanks Bill Edited June 27, 2011 by bhobba
proftournesol Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 It'll go well with my Solos (that also use 250W SS power).
Guest Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Very nice video presentation nice looking amp ,as whatmore typed head room doesn't go a stray . But if it sounds good and matches the power requirements of their speakers then you have a winner . CHeers
Tax Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 From memory, I think this is what I listened to in it's prototype form when I visited the Factory last July. It sounded very nice with the Duo Mezzo and Duo Omega speakers. SWMBO was in attendance and my priority at the time was the Omega driver upgrade so I did not concentrate on the amp but I'd did not sound SS at all. BTW: Avantgarde has never recommended low powered amps for their speakers. I think this was specifically built to cover the gap in amplifiers as they found most of their dealers were pairing the speakers with valves. They pulled their Parisien distribution as they were being sold with Audio Note.
