PSV Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Hi all, I found this site that might help those who are looking for a way to decide on a particular cartridge. The files are CD quality. http://daveyw.edsstuff.org/vinyl/cartridges Paul
NIMBUS Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 It never ceases to amaze me, how intelligent people can offer 'CD Quality" recordings, in order to asses the qualities of Turn Table options or upgrades. The very reason we enshrine vynal to out hearts is that we believe, justifiably, that it provide much greater sonic definition and immeasurable nuances that can never be realized from a CD, with all the quantisation errors and noise that it contains, whatever format is used. So how in the name of Quality Sound (I detest the term Hi Fi); can a CD get near to indicating the sonic differences and nuances, accurately between differing cartridges, when the signal has to go through the tortuous rout of AD/DA processing!!! There is a guy in the US who offers CDs to demonstrate the “vast improvements” of his modified SL1200 bearing, in comparison to my totally redesigned and engineered bearing. The results are meaningless according to people I have spoken to, one of whom is an instrumentation engineer with a very high degree of experience and achievement in signal processing.

Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted June 27, 2011 Volunteer Posted June 27, 2011 Paul, I'm a bit of a newbie to vinyl but I reckon this is probably quite useful to get a broad idea of the overall characteristics of different cartridges So how in the name of Quality Sound (I detest the term Hi Fi); can a CD get near to indicating the sonic differences and nuances, accurately between differing cartridges, when the signal has to go through the tortuous rout of AD/DA processing!!! @NIMBUS, can you hear any difference between the files? If you can, what do you attribute them to if not caused by sonic differences between the cartridges?

It is usually impossible to go to any shop, and ask to hear a particular cartridge. And unless you know someone who has the cartridge you're interested in, the only guide is reviewers' impressions. These files allow you to hear recordings of many different MI, MM and MC cartridges at a quality that may allow the sonic differences to be evident. Keith, I never intended that the cartridge only provide CD quality, simply that on this site you can download the same tracks recorded on similar equipment but using different cartridges, to get an idea of how each cartridge sounds. jaspert Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Hi all,I found this site that might help those who are looking for a way to decide on a particular cartridge. The files are CD quality. http://daveyw.edsstuff.org/vinyl/cartridges Paul Thanks for the link. I was interested to read his brief impression of various cartridges of which quite a few were of some interest to me over the years. I didn't listen to the sound samplings but i do know some uk forum where the members there are very keen on presenting "needle drop" to compare various cartridge/arm/ turntables changes and many reported being able to pick the difference despite the AD/DA conversion.

Paul Hi Paul, that is a little different to what I read in your original post and of course I subsequently took a look at the site and there is some good information given there in the description of the differences in cartridges he has used and it would be a very good reference if you were looking to try those cartridges in your system. I have also heard about the comparisons being made between converted/copied LPs using different cartridges and in that regard I would agree, they probably are CD quality!:nana Cheers, Keith
