Luc Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 WTB: I'm on a mission for a nephew of mine who is in Melb. He wants a cheapish AV receiver and a friend has told him to buy this Onkyo new. I thought I might be able to find him something better here at SNA but also at less money than the 4 or 500 this model costs. I'm not into HT so don't know much about these. I quote him here: " Have an AppleTV, six ****ty little speakers and a laptop I always connect." So I suggested to ditch the little speakers (I didn't ask what they were...) and get a pair of better ones, he said how about four(it sounded like a auction bid). OK how much you want to spend then? $800 was the answer and I said that'll give me something to play with, how much for the receiver? He wants to spend $800 all up... on both... That could make it hard for me then. So I'll tackle the AV Receiver first. I've missed a couple just recently it seems so if you've got one that meets the criteria PM me
el toro Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 (edited) Hey Luc, I've got a Yamaha RV-v459 that I'd like to move on. No HDMI and it's only 5.1 (sure they're up to 39.1 channels or something by now....) but a solid unit and sounds reasonable in 2 channel as well as surround. Full function remote. I'd say 8 our of ten in terms of cosmetic condition. Can be had for bargain price of $100 if you're nephew can pick it up from Brunswick. But I'm sure this will be the first of many offers - there seems to be many A/V receivers 'in reserve' among the crowd here. cheers Edited June 26, 2011 by el toro amended model number
Luc Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Sounds great el toro but he needs hdmi. I'll run it past him though, Brunswick isn't too far from him either.
el toro Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 No worries Luc. And hey, not trying to talk anyone into anything, but is the HDMI going to be carrying an audio signal? If it's just the video signal, I'm under the impression that the receiver just becomes a pass through or a glorified switch. When I was using it, I connected my video components straight into the TV and just avoided the receiver all together - figured it was just more curcuitry to get in the way. But - I'm a bit clueless with this stuff (as soon as I knew you could run a sub with a 2 channel amp I went straight back ) and not trying to push anything. Good luck with the search. Hey, btw are you happy with the SonofaGum? Was considering one myself a while ago and would be interested to hear yr thoughts. cheers
Luc Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 SonofaGum is still to arrive el toro, I'm as interested as you! Have you read JohnnyDarko's review on it? Good point about the HDMI, I'm thinking it has something to do with his laptop+Apple TV. I know nothing about Apple gear. I'll ask him tonight.
el toro Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Haven't read the review - will as soon as I get a tick. Just remember a few very positive comments here. Sounds like he's deal with a bit of whizbangery there - thinking about getting the apple tv myself, so I may soon have to learn about it too! cheers
Luc Posted July 4, 2011 Author Posted July 4, 2011 Still looking for an AV and I forgot to mention some speakers as well.
Luc Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Just a nudge up to the top. I'm thinking of advising the nephew to go with his $400 new Onkyo that a mate of his suggested. I thought I could get better here for the money but I was just a bit late as there was a splurge of AV recievers up for sale and now the've dried up a bit.
Guest Peter the Greek Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Ebay....lots of good stuff for that money, new too
Luc Posted July 16, 2011 Author Posted July 16, 2011 I keep meaning to look for them there but when I go there I peek at the speakers/DACs/SS's...and I'm lost..
Luc Posted July 27, 2011 Author Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) Still looking for an AV receiver with HDMI for my nephew, might have found some bookshelf speakers within his budget(from here of course ) but a Receiver would be nice too. Especially without the hassle of fleabay. Edited July 27, 2011 by Luc Typo
gat474 Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 You might want to post this WTB on the DTV forum as they are more biased towards HT.
davewantsmoore Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) 800 ... hmmm ... this doesn't buy smart HT. 300 = solid 10-ish year old integrated stereo amp 500 = new or 2nd hand entry-level bookshelf speakers and stands Connect ATV to TV set via HDMI, and connect ATV to amplifier using regular (RCA) audio cables. advising the nephew to go with his $400 new Onkyo that a mate of his suggested You know how bad it will sound, right!? ... I think it's one of the duties of the people that frequent forums such as this to steer people away from modern audio junk (HT in a box stuff with plastic speakers, and amps that have 7x100wpc plus every bell and whistle for 500 clams). Get him some not awful tannoy, b&w, or some such bookshelves, and a solid brand 2nd hand integrated stereo amp from the turn of the centruy (marantz? sony?) .... and he will thank you so much for it I'm sure.
