Hi

I have an old Yamaha RX -V392 Receiver and I am using with a pair of Jamo Cornet 30IV bookshelfs. This is not my critical listening HiFi but am using that set in the kitchen for casual listening.

I am looking to replace the bookshelfs with some entry level floorstanders – something that won't break the bank.

I am looking at the V392 user manual and I am quite confused.

Audio Section Minimum RMS Output per channel Main L/R 8 OHM 50W + 50W, then it goes on to read:

Maximum Power Main L/R 75W + 75W, then it goes on with:

8/6/4/2 ohms.....80/100/120/135W

I am actually looking at the Accusound OM950 floor standers and the specs from the official website is:

Frequency Response: 40-20000Hz

Power Watts RMS: 120

Sensitivity1w@1m

Rated Impedence 8 ohms

I am not sure if the V392 have enough power to pump those speakers.

Any help and suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thanks & Rgds

You will be fine. Disregard the later power output figures...50wrms is what you're working with here. You should have no issues driving these speakers.

Thanks Pete and Paul.

Just a curious question. The Accusound is 8Ohms 120W - The V392 pushes out only 50 w per channel. To get some decent volume, I would need to crank it up a bit and my concern is distortion?

I forgot to mention too that I am streaming my music in FLAC via an SB Touch from a NAS. I got 2 Touchs. One for critical listening in my main HiFi. My wife was so impressed with the Touch, she asked if we could put one in the kitchen for casual listening :-) One of the best invention around...

The 120W figure means nothing with regards to the output of the speaker - it is a power handling figure only.

The OM950 is 88db/1w/1m sensitivity. With a 50WRMS/ch amp, you will be able to achieve over 100dB easily if required (ie. plenty loud).

Plug some specs into a basic SPL calculator like this and see what it pops out: http://myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.html

The power rating usually means how much power you can input for a certain amount of time before the voice coil melts. Usually before that happens the woofer exceeds excursion limits, that might only take 20w. And often at an even lower input the speaker starts losing its composure before showing signs of stress. The advantage of more amp power is mostly that you ensure it doesn't clip - headroom.

Many, many thanks :-)

The OM950 is RRP$499. Would you recommend a similar floorstander?

I had another look at the picture on the Accusound website and I see that this model have front ports instead of at the back. How will this affect the sound and I rarely see front facing ports. I do see side facing. What would be the disadvantage of front facing ports? Less bottom end as it has no wall at the back?

I am hoping to demo the OM950 and any other recommended similar speakers end of this week.

Have you considered a second-hand pair of floorstanders instead? Or are you 100% set on buying new speakers?

I think you would get better bang-for-buck and a superior result if you look for second-hand speakers in this price range, rather than a new pair of Accusounds.

eg.

(heaps of other examples out there too, inclding stuff from Australian companies such as Richter, Aaron etc)

Wharfedale also have a few options for new floorstanding speakers in the sub-$500 range:

I guess the main downside with buying off ebay or second-hand is that it is often hard to actually audition the speakers beforehand, so you are buying 'blind' to some extent.

Those speakers will work out well with your receiver, as an example, using the linked spl calculator , my Topping TP20 (20 watts into 4 ohms or about 12 into 8) with my Richmonds which are 86dB 1w/1m from 4 ft listening distance still produce over 100 dB (just) which is plenty loud. On the other hand my 60 watt amp into 92dB speakers at 8 feet give in excess of 115dB max, which is too loud for me.

What you might estimate is one thing. What sounds listenable is another. They can be some distance apart.

Don't worry about ports. If the speaker is far enough from walls to sound their best, it will not matter. If they have to go right up against a wall, then a rear port is a problem. A downfiring port is more consistent because its distance from the boundary is fixed. Often it will couple better to the room as well.

The above seem good but not being able to listen first makes it quite unappealing. Anyone heard those speakers before?

I hope to spend no more then $500 on those floor standers. Are there something similar around to those Accusound in price and performance that will go well with my old receiver. I cannot find any Aarons or Richter speakers with that sort of price range.

many thanks

I was thinking used, not new, when making those recommendations. You won't find either of the above for under $500 new - they are well and truly a step above the Accusounds.

forum member 'bus_boy' had some of these a little while back. Check out his thread which gives some thoughts on them.

Not bad entry level speakers, the Accusounds. They'll do the job despite their lightweight build.
