Much like Bear and Em have left the big smoke, I've decided to bail out of Sydney for good. 54 years in one place is enough I reckon.

I'm going overseas however :)

Devonport in Tassie beckons and I'm making the move mid August and will be travelling light.

Now that I've made the decision, I'm looking forward to a much slower and more relaxing lifestyle.

Congrats on your decision Andrew . Will we be seeing any joint projects between you and Dr Crawford :) ?

Tassie is one of the few places we have not yet visited in Oz, Andrew.

You've just given us another incentive to make the "overseas" trip. If/when we do, we'll be sure to look you up.

I agree, BTW. I've lived in my fair share of "big smokes". Never again. They can be very nice places to visit ....

No Gordon there wont. My speaker building days are firmly behind me and I'm finishing off the last system to wear the Aslan label now.

The next months focus is on flogging off everything I own except the car, the camera gear and the clothes on my back.

Tassie is still in the 70's in a lot of respects Bill, which I suspect is the main attraction.

Are you retiring for good Andrew or hoping to find some other type of work? The reason I ask this is because my wife's sister moved to Devenport about 2 years ago along with her 26 year old son who has failed to find any work for over a year. Great place to visit but man it gets cold there, even in summer.

Cheers,

Greg

Wow, a big decision. Congrats on the conviction and surity.

I hope that you enjoy the new lifestyle.

Better still if it was still in the '60s :)

Yep, I have met more than a few people who proclaim the lifestyle there to be the world's best. If you don't mind rugging up ten months of the year. My brother and his wife escaped the rain and humidity (well, at least the humidity) up here last summer by spending almost two months down there living in their 4x4 and a roof top tent. Loved every minute of it.

Have you really lived in or about Sydney all your days? For a bloke who gets around as much as you do, that seems strange.

Retiring.....I wish mate. I've got a mate who is 'putting me up' until I find something. Where I live now is both the hottest and coldest place in Sydney.............from 40+ in summer to sub zero in winter. I'll get used to the wind chill down there.

Bill, I've never lived more than 80ks from the CBD.

North Sydney, Lalor Park, Dundas Valley, Meadowbank, Marayong, Kings Langley, Kurrajong Heights and North Richmond. Technically as Kurra and Northo are 'over the river', its not really part of the City proper but you still have to drive through the place to get anywhere.

Hey! My home town.

I'd say that moving from Sydney you will get the change of pace you desire ;-)

well, at least the humidity

Heh. Common misconception. If you believe wikipedia, Northern Tasmania is included in a paragraph discussing the "most humid climates on earth".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidity#Climate

Good luck getting your clothes dry, that's all I can say ;-)

Finding work is also a big issue down here, although obviously, like anywhere, depends on what you're looking for.

It's interesting. I''ve visited all the major mainland cities except Darwin - definitely too hot and humid. I've only actually lived in one of them - Sydney - on the northern beaches (Harbord/Dee Why) in 1983-85. Even then the traffic was abominable.

I like all the Aussie cities, but I certainly wouldn't LIVE in Sydney or Melbourne, which puts me at odds with about half the population, I guess.

I really like Adelaide - especially the hills. Perth is a great place, although we have only been there in early Summer. Hot sure, but nice and dry with it. The problem with Brisbane is it is inexorably expanding to fill the entire SE Coast between Noosa and the Tweed and we have the worst State government in Australian history.

It's a function of age too. I loved the city in the days when my nights were just beginning at 10PM rather than winding down at that hour. But if I HAD to live in a big city now, I'd pick one in the UK or Europe. Traffic or lack of same is not a problem there. When I lived in London in the early 1970s, I only knew one person who owned a car.

Yep, finally ran out of river Chewie, time to move to a new one. The place I'll be living overlooks the Ferry Terminal near the mouth of the Mersey.

Hi Andrew, I hope you enjoy your move to Devenport mate. A few years back now I had an extended stay in Devenport [company rented a house there] and really I enjoyed it down there. I had crews working on refurbishment work on the Spirit boats and I spent a lot of time travelling back and forth and it felt like I had two homes at the time. It'll be a big change from Sydney so I hope you're ready for that and I wish you the best of luck mate.

Edit: Hope you get to spend some time in Melbourne on your way to get the Ferry and we can catch up.

Cheers,

Keith

Hey Andrew,

Welcome to Tassie. My old stomping ground was only 12klms from Devonport.

Let us know when you get here, perhaps we could have a red one or a frothy

one some time.

Thanks Keith, working on catching up with a few of the boys in transit.

Graham, be great to share a red with you mate - second parcel leaving Monday.

Thanks Jasper.

Good onya Andrew. I reckon you'll love it in Tassie, plenty of stuff to photograph.

Look up Olegas Truchanas on the web.

Will have to catch up for a chat at Bathurst, are you still going to make it?

Cheers, Earle.

Jeez you blokes are funny...spend half your life takin' the piss out of tassie...then you all move here Ha Ha

It's alright to move there, just wouldn't want to be born there :)

Andrew.

I wish you nothing but good things and happiness in your move to a less frenetic area of this great country we have.

If anyone deserves some good luck and a change in fortunes it would be you, so all the very best in your new environment.

Have fun and take care.
