grubriella Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi Everyone I have recently decided to purchase an entry level turntable, Pro-ject Essential. However, I am having trouble setting it up. Firstly, the cartridge does not seem to touch the vinyl at the edge, however, if i move the arm towards the centre, it touches and plays music. I have followed the instructions from the manual, however, I don't think that is the problem here. If anyone has any experience or may know what the problem is, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am very new to this, so I have no idea how to approach it...
Anthony John Colbert Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Could be tracking force ...or the armlift might need adjusting, cant think of much else that could cause your problems. That one has the unipivot arm from memory?
Omegaspeedy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi grubriella, the arm when set up properly should have full vertical travel allowing the cart to rest on top of the record at the weight you set it up at without binding against it's stop. I'm wondering if the arm is level with the turn table when the stylus is resting on the record. If the arm is too high at the pivot end, the arm might be 'bottomed out' ie at it's max vertical down travel at the cartridge end. Check the arm is level and if not, lower the pivot end by unscrewing the allan key head on the pillar support (check manual for VTA setting). Also double check Vertical tracking force. Ideally you should have a VTF gauge to set it up properly because the index on the counterweights are a very rough guess at best. The gauges are cheap to buy. AU$30 should get you one and some cartridge manufactures give them away with their cartridges. All the best, James.
Omegaspeedy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Just looking at pictures I'm wondering if it has VTA adjustment? I think colby1970 is right that the lifter could need adjusting.
grubriella Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks everyone for all the help. And it was the lifter. It wasn't screwed in properly. Thanks again!

cheekyboy Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Thanks everyone for all the help. And it was the lifter. It wasn't screwed in properly. Thanks again! Good to see you've got it sorted grubriella, I can only imagine you would have had trouble setting your VTA/VTF with the lifter not correctly positioned? Here is a pretty basic tutorial on TT and cart set up that you might find of interest to read and as a reference if you have any further trouble. Cheers, Keith
cheekyboy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 That's a great link Cheeky. Thanks You're welcome Grumps..........sorta like telling an old TT veteran like you how to suck eggs though I reckon mate!
Grumpy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 How does one suck eggs ? I still can't work out how to lign the cart up properly - seems to match up with any lines on any protractor i use.
davidsss Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Grumpy, you have to align the egg properly or it just don't work right Have you tried an arc protractor? They are very accurate and it might just make more sense to you when you try and use it. Alignment can be tricky. Find Conrad Hoffman's downloadable arc protractor generator and have a go. DS
