IMHO, the "middle" (not minor or major) Centaurs are truly lovely speakers. I had a pair for several years and, although I subsequently had Centaur Majors for quite a while, I still remember these more fondly for some reason.

I ended up selling them on consignment via Grenfell Hifi. When I was asked if a prospective buyer could take them home on approval for a week, I agreed because I couldn't imagine them being returned to the shop. The salesguy said he was sure I was right as he was sorely tempted himself. I know these aren't mine as mine had the woodgrain panels. Although I reckon the "anthracite" ones that Adrocks is selling look better, I'd find my old ones even harder to resist for sentimental reasons.:party

And the truth is these are hard enough to resist, especially at the very modest asking price. The mids and treble are superb and they can play surprisingly loud, especially with an ME850, which is a great match with Apogees in my experience.

Stop it, Adrocks - I don't want to know. I'll just go and do something else and not even think about them............... I'll put them out of my mind. I've already got too many speakers.......... I'm not going to look at them or listen to them.......:thumb:

Someone, please snap them up - if they sound as good as mine did (no reason why they shouldn't) you'll be doing yourself a big favour.

Cheers

Adam, l think you have Tony 98% over the line! Just need to put up a few more pics to finish off the job.

Good luck with the sale, a bargain for someone from a great seller.

C'mon Tony,

Think of all the fond memories they bring back to you , and just 1 more pair of speakers won't hurt, will they.

Anyway thanks very much Tony for the high praise for them, and Simon for the high praise for me as a seller.

They do sound pretty good IMHO too, but the truth is I have far too many speakers myself, and I have decided it is time to let a few things go so I can clear a bit of space back in my music room as there is no longer enough room left in there to comfortably enjoy listening to music anymore.

Its either let a few things go or get a bigger house. And with my hifi addiction, I just can't afford a bigger house.

cheers

I was fortunate enough to listen to these last night and they are great speakers....especially for the price Adam is selling them for!

Bargain Tony :thumb:

I just have to chime in here, and say that there is no way these speakers are worth what Adrocks is asking for them...they are worth a LOT more!! At $1500 these would be a great buy (they were over $4k new), at Adrocks price they are an absolute steal. Some lucky buyer will be very happy, both with their sound quality plus with a top bargain as well. As a former owner of these, I know exactly how great they are! Good luck with sale!

Apogee's are amongst the very best sounding speakers of all time, they produce nearly all the benefits of good Electrostatics without the need to power them.

Replacement Mid/High Ribbons are available in Australia should the need ever arise.

Id be curious as to what replaced these, as they are excellent. Good way to get into true high-end.

Id dearly love to snap these up but am worried about possible damage in transit, any ideas how to pack & send these to Perth safely?

FWIW:

If my experience in shipping 2 pair of speakers from flemo in Perth is a valid guide, then "pack and send" is the way to go. I say this because in both cases the cartons were apparently custom made to suit the speakers, they were double-walled cardboard and were extensively and clearly labelled "top load only" "fragile" etc. The speakers had been carefully wrapped in two layers of different density foam and they were delivered to the door in exactly a week. The cartons seemed to have been kept the right side up all the way. Apparently they have a "gold class" service that ensures personal handling etc. The cost for a pair of Gales was around $135.00 plus insurance. I'd expect the apogees to be in the order of 50% more at the most, but that's a guess only.

Could be worth having a chat to one of our local franchisees - I'm sure Adrocks will advise further.....

Cheers

BTW, did I mention Apogee Centaurs are beautiful speakers?:nana I'm still not sure I want you to buy them.;)

I run these same speakers and i can tell you they are very very good. I had a over 10 pairs of other speakers and the apogees always sound more musical. For the price of these you will have to spend thousands to beat them

By these Apogees and the ME 850 which is still for sale on SNA (I think) and you would have the major components of a very fine system indeed - at a true bargain price.

Good luck on the sale. Apogees are truly wonderful speakers.

Thanks for the high praise of the Apogees and well wishes on the sale guys.

Agree with you all, indeed they are very good, but too many speakers and not enough room for them all.

Tony they could act as good sound panels when your not playing em! You can never have too many speakers! Cheap price and from a good seller what else could you ask for! You can always sell them in a year when you have had a chance to play with them!

I have listened to these Speakers at Adam's place.

Very musical, vocals are sweet ..... warm.

If I didn't have my current speakers and didn't want a bigger tv ... I would go them.

Good Luck Adam ..... They deserve a nice home.

I was browsing Apogee Acoustics recently and was surprised to see that the brand name has been acquired by an Australian company who provide support and spare parts including new ribbons for the whole range, including classic models.

So, why buy from Adrocks, when you can get brand new Apogee ribbon speakers? The 1.5 metre Synergy, for instance, is only $32,000.00 - and I don't think it's any where near the top of their line.:)

Hi John,

The Synergy is the modern equivalent of the original Scintilla.

Synergy is a three way ribbon that can be driven by a medium powered valve amp.

As far as I know Apogee Acoustics does not make replacement bass ribbons for the old Studio Grand or Stage, all others are avialable.
