Bus_Boy Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 (edited) Tonight i thought i was bidding on an item, but it turns out i clicked "By Now" instead. All though i'm certain i entered an amount less than the price, it still some how took me to the wrong section, and before i realised what i was doing ( i was just clicking confirm bid) it was too late. The item was $1895, if the buyer has to re-list will they still have to pay the 10% fee's? Or will i have to pay them? I'd really hate to have to pay $185 for such a silly mistake. vmhf Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 As a courtesy you should only pay the listing fee that he paid initially. So around $5 or so usually. He can relist after you both mutually agree to end the transaction. This has happened to me a few times always whilst I was the seller though...
Luc Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 You can retract your bid BB if you've made a genuine mistake. I typed in 110.000. instead of 1100.00. and went straight to the retract option. I think you can too.
vmhf Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 That's right. Once both buyer and seller mutually agree to end the transaction the seller gets a credit on the initial listing fees from my experience. No biggie really unless the seller is one of those people who is easily offended!

Aslan Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Hang on a tic............once someone hits the 'buy now', doesn't ebay automatically charge the seller the selling fee based on the buy it now price? If the transaction doesn't proceed, the seller still has to pay the listing fee, the sales commission and the re-listing fee. That's not fair on the seller unless ebay waive the selling fee, which they are unlikely to do I suspect.
Full Range Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Thats a bloody big mistake The only way to find out the Ebay policy is to do a live chat with Ebay and discuss your options FR
danter Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Dont worry. I had a buyer pull out of a Buy it Now just last week. As a seller, there is no final sale fees. Yu get a free relist if something doesn't sell anyway. If the seller is pedantic, toss him the listing fee which will be very small (ie well below $10). Just contact the seller and let him now what happened and he will raise it as a cancelled sale. Ebay emails you to confirm. No biggie (unless he is a pita and then it will just take longer - and if so, I think the system is so bad you can still leave feedback).

wolster Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 The main message is to contact the seller immediately, if you have not already done so.

protecon Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I'm still confused how you can mistake the explicit instructions regarding each step of the purchase. What possibly could have happened is the seller can stipulate a margin from the asking price to which they can automatically accept offers.
LogicprObe Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Never go on ebay during a binge drinking session.
A J Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Never go on ebay during a binge drinking session. +1 haha

That's not fair on the seller unless ebay waive the selling fee, which they are unlikely to do I suspect. Yes thats correct, it happened to me selling a car for $5000. Guy hit buy now (I'm not sure how you can claim this as a mistake because it clearly states on the next screen that if you proceed, you have bought the item) and then flopped on it. I was charged about $250-$300 IIRC. However, once the item was re-listed, ebay took that as proof that the sale had flopped and refunded. The guy agreed to pay the re-list fee which was about $25, so I came out financially unscathed, but short about 3 hours of my time .... cest la vie.
GryphonGuy Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 I'm puzzled and intrigued. You didn't want to buy the item but you did want to make an unsuccessful "bid" on the item. The posting you made was a mistake. Why waste your own time and the time of everybody else in this saga? Why put a "bid" in the first place if you didn't want to buy it?

The posting you made was a mistake. Why waste your own time and the time of everybody else in this saga? Why put a "bid" in the first place if you didn't want to buy it? I think you misunderstand. BB did want to purchase he item, however wanted his winning bid to be higher than his first bid. The disappointment of winning through a Buy Now bid is the real issue. I think that BB should ask for the item to be relisted and then bid again. It might help if BB creates a couple of additional eBay identities so he can have a bidding war against himself to ensure a satisfactory result.
wolster Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 I wonder what the result was. BB seems to have gone missing.
Bus_Boy Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 (edited) Ok so i've sorted it out. I contacted the buyer and he contacted ebay and i was sent a form to cancel my transaction. There were no fee's involved thankfully. GryphonGuy - I think you comment was a little harsh and must have miss understood my post. The seller had listed a "buy now" price of $1800, however i believe the item may potentially go for less than that. Yes i do want the item, however the "buy now" price is beyond my reach, but you never know luck may have been in my favour and i could have won it for less. I don't see how i wasted anyone's time, there were no previous bidders, and it was an honest mistake by a novest Ebayer. I was attempting to enter the amount i have to spend as a bid. I apoligise to the SNA community for having dragged them into some sort of "saga" as you put it. Edited June 24, 2011 by Bus_Boy
wolster Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Good news BB. Glad it is sorted without cost. Thanks for reporting back.

LogicprObe Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I love a 'saga'! Is there anything wrong with that? (use Jewish accent)
