(Didn't know where to place this thread, so if it belongs elsewhere please move it.)

Just thought this may be of interest to those in SNA who enjoy an ale or two.

I had lunch at a country pub today (very unusual for me, -pubs that is) and noticed an ad on the table for a competition. Depending on which Boags brew you take in, you are in the running for either this amplified speaker system,

or this one

Besides the competition draw for an audio product associated with alcohol being somewhat different, I thought that the keg speaker was a novel idea. (6" driver both ends)

This particular keg is a plastic imitation. Would anyone know if one has been made from a real one and how it would sound in a metal cylinder. I have seen a cool DIY winebarrel sub some time ago but can't relocate the website.

Looking forward to your replies.

Yoda,

Plastic isn't a great speaker box material. The clear acrylic will do ok, but the limiting factor is probably the crossover and drivers. Ideally the box would have some damping material, but looks and novelty are more of a priority obviously. Now the keg if it were metal would have problems as metal tends to ring. That could be fixed without too much trouble. Being plastic is another matter, probably more difficult to improve.

Are you thinking of making something like it? If you want to make a metal keg into a worthwhile speaker box, it needs another material added internally to damp the high Q ring. Knock on steel, even if very stiff and it rings. Add some damping and it can work well.

Thanks for the reply Paul.

In the rush to put out a post, the intent is sometimes lost. I think this happened here, -my apologies.

I have no intention of building such problematic items, but the "ingenuity" of the keg impressed me. So my curiosity is directed toward novelty audio projects that SNA members have seen/built/bought and how they have overcome material/acoustic hurdles along the way, or have they left them as is (-to be part of their garage system for example). Recently there was a ForSale post on a pair of speakers housed in PVC sewage pipes. I was interested in the description of their sound after internal treatment. The pair sold but the toilet humor that followed....

... was pretty clever as I recall.

I figured you were probably asking out of curiosity mostly.
