everyones_shadow Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Hello everyone A few weeks back I listened to Lady gaga for the first time. I'd heard her as background music before but I decided I should give her a careful listen as she seems to be here to stay. I listened to her album 'Fame' and decided it wasn't well recorded, I dodn't like her music and (a separate issue) she wasn't musically worthwhile*. IMHO. YMMV etc. * The Beatles and Mozart I consider musically worthwhile but I don't much like either. Splodgenessabounds I like very much but to not consider worthwhile. Soon after I visited Darthlaker and he played me two tracks off The Fame Monster (Fame + an 8 track CD previously released) without saying what the CD or who the artist was but pointing out how well it was recorded and how impressive the music was. I agreed and thought the singer sounded familiar. I'm always happy to discover new music so I said I'd get The Fame Monster and listen to it. I did and... nope. Still poor sounding and boring through my system. To me one of the main reasons to have a high quality sound system is to be able to discover new music and make the strange or difficult comprehensible and enjoyable. When I was a kid and we had a Kreisler Jumbo Dad's jazz records sounded boring. He listened to simple things like Peter Nero and Julie Christie. Take 5 was as complex as it got. When I got my Systemdek/Creek/AR system I discovered they were interesting and enjoyable but branching out to more difficult jazz wasn't rewarding. It just sounded like cats being strangled. By the time I'd upgraded to my LP12 free jazz held no fears for me. I could sing along with Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler. And the thing is once a good sysstem has 'taught' me a difficult piece it still remains enjoyable and comptrehensible when heard on a lesser system like a car radio. So I should have been 'converted' to Lady Gaga by Darthlaker's system. Nope. I guess I just need a really good hifi to appreciate her. I wonder why? Has anyone else experienced this? ES
RockandorRoll Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 She has the one song that Darthlaker played when i was there - Brown Eyes. Sounds alright on my system but still not enough for me to go and buy the album (even at $10) ive listened to the whole thing on Youtube, not a huge fan
proftournesol Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 It's a strange thing, when I added the StereoKnight preamp and Strain Gauge cart to my system I was having similar experiences: albums that sounded crap before suddenly sounded really engaging, albums that I thought that I knew were rediscovered. Also, a small number of albums that sounded good before now were almost unlistenable. The advantage of a hi-res system is that on the whole, albums become more accessible and engaging.
