Steven Hinchliffe Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Hi All, Relatively new to stereo.net and to better quality audio. I recently bought a redgum sonofa'gum amp to run with my (vintage) Marantz CD52IISE. I really love the sound it's brought to my system, but whenever it's switched on there is an audible (albeit quiet) hum in the background; I'm guessing it's some sort of mains hum. How do I go about fixing it? Sorry for my ignorance, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Steve
BTam Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 If the hum for a few seconds,it's normal, if not contact redgum they'll fix it. 7yrs warranty
bhobba Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 If the hum for a few seconds,it's normal, if not contact redgum they'll fix it. 7yrs warranty There is nothing wrong with your unit - no warranty or fix required. I had the same problem when I had my Sonofagum in my system. It only does it with some sources. After a lot of investigation including replacing interconnects with shielded ones and all sorts of other stuff the cause was narrowed down to the extremely wilde bass bandwidth the amp has - it goes down to something like 3hz and some sources are not designed to have that lower frequencies amplified. The answer is change your source or do what I did - simply put up with it. To verify that is the problem trey some different sources and see what that does. Thanks Bill
PorkBun69s Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I have some hum coming from my tube amp, and i have very sensitive speakers. This is ok, so as long its not too loud, ie: you can hear the hum like 2 or more meters away from the speakers. Mine's only noticable when i'm less than 1m from my 96db speakers, which is acceptable.
Steven Hinchliffe Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Thanks for the replies folks. I don't think it's a fault, and the hum isn't coming through the speakers, only from the transformer. I will try disconnecting my cd player to see if it is source related, but the hum is audible even when switched to standby mode, so I suspect it may be something else. I'm suspecting minimal DC coming through the mains may be the culprit; apparently a DC blocker is possible to make/buy, but I haven't seen one around. Any suggestions?
