It's on!

Venus Williams is up to the usual sister's tricks, making her opponent wait ten minutes before she decides to stroll out onto the court.

Is it just me? I just love to see the Williams sisters get beaten, preferably after losing three match points.

It is on again Wal and that court looks bloody sensational, doesn't it? Another two weeks of insomnia for me, but it is a great tournament and it will be interesting how much better 7 can do the coverage. I'm not much of a Williams sister fan so really couldn't care less if they won or lost.......preferably lost!

Cheers,

Keith

Agreed, Keith, the courts look sensational.

Switching between 7 and Foxtel.

Have to say I am impressed with Alicia Molik as a commentator.

can't say I am impressed with Channel 72 SD only.

Fox is in HD.

Again FTA screws us over. :-(

BUT

the tennis should be fantastic. Looking forward to it.

I reckon 2 of the best matches I've ever seen were Wim finals over the last 3 years.

Hoping this year's is the best match ever..

Of course the quality of all sporting matches is determined by how well the loser plays.

In tennis, the drama requires a full 5 sets.

Jelena Dokic put up a good fight last night. I watched the first set, which she narrowly lost.

From all accounts the rain halted her momentum after she won the second 6-1.

Why does it take them an hour to close the roof on centre court?

Certainly not one of the best matches I have seen. Far from it...

What made it a little out of the ordinary was the roof being closed for only the second time in the two years it has been up.

I missed last time the roof was closed so it was quite special to watch last nights match for that reason.

Seemed almost like watching another tournament with the different lighting and sound effects!

You could really hear the rain beating down on the roof which I suspect the designers had intended.

Perhaps to add some extra atmosphere to a closed arena?

Although looking at the clear panels to allow the light through maybe it was not possible to dampen all the noise from the rain...

That would be my guess. Unless it was a strategy to minimise the advantage the Williams sisters and the other screamers get from screaming at the point of contact with the ball :).

Cheeky,

inbox has been relieved. Lots of hate mail deleted.

Wol,

the reason it takes so long to close the roof is due to the speed of the motors.

Orpheus,

the designers want the drumming of the rain on the roof to drown out Sharapova. It was in the design specs. "92dB minimum".

Good luck to them on that front.

We Brits start another two weeks of torture, wondering if by some miracle our home gown star can make it to the final. Its interesting how we treat nationality. If Murray wins, its another British triumph, if he loses its a Scottish failure.

Actually once he'd warmed up yesterday he played some good tennis with a much stronger serve than last year.

This could be his best chance, custodian.

Unfortunately, like Tim Henman before him, the weight of local hope and expectation is a heavy weight to carry.

I think its his best chance too, but I think he is not quite good enough to win it.

Not really sure why we've gone so many decades without winning it. Something fundamentally flawed in the way we view tennis. Over here, its viewed still as an upper class sport, so vast majority of kids don't get into it seriously.

Still, we've shown recently that we can beat the best at cricket.....

Sorry, custodian, it is bad form to mention cricket in a tennis thread. ;-)

Back to Wimbledon, I can't believe that the same no-name match is first up on both Foxtel and channel 72.

And the fact that there are three truly great tennis players, Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer to beat!

Very true, Orpheus.

Q. Should Stosur forget about playing on grass?

Observation: I was very impressed with Bernard Tomic last night. A very professional performance. I just wish someone in his team would inject some personality into the young bloke - but he is only 18.

Hi Orpheus

Re Stosur. Imagine if she had the heart and will to win that Hewitt has? enuf said

yes, Tomic was good, however Davadeynco ? is a pale shadow of his former self. I just struggle to see how Tomic will become a top 20 player without getting a stronger more reliable serve and better mobility. Not sure about his forehand, he seems to be able to hit it hard when he wants. His backhand and court craft is excellent.

Great to see Hewitt win. He really has had a hard time with injuries etc over the last few years. For his sake, I really hope he can have an injury free 2012 so he can retire on his own terms sometime after that.

Turntable, I think that Wolster can take the credit for most of what you are responding to :P.

I am not familiar with the draw. When do Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer meet (assuming they win their preceding matches)?

For me, these will be the interesting matches. Federer's tendency to rely on his slice backhand will not be so much of a liability on grass. I hope he comes to the net regularly and makes use of his terrific touch at the net.

So it's pouring with rain so we only have the ladies match to watch with the roof closed on centre court - but what a match.

The first set was full of drama and great tennis. Venus down 1-5. Fights back to a tie-break. Down 2-6 in the tie-break. Fights back to 6-6 only to lose the set to the gutsy 40 year old Japanese girl, Date-Krumm. No question who the crowd is going for, and it is definately not Miss Williams.

Settling into the second set at 1-1 but I suspect that the big American will soon impose herself.
