Cheers @2Brix

Previously I've thought it better to have fewer, busier, 'melting pot' spinning threads rather than lots of smaller ones segregated by genre or format. But that ship sailed long ago. These days the vinyl and jazz spinning threads are sometimes more active than mondie's original currently spinning and they are among my favourite threads on SNA, so who can complain about another one? Especially one dedicated to funk.

James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone round out my all time all genre Top 3, so yeah, I'm pretty keen on funk.

To get the thread on the - er - good foot, I'll post an early funk classic, my favourite JB track, 'Cold Sweat'. This also ties in nicely with the opening posts: Maceo's tenor work is great here. I've seen people point to this as the first funk recording. I reckon there are precedents going back to 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' and 'Out of Sight', but there's no doubt the formula was really coming together by 'Cold Sweat': the whole band scored for percussive effect and the emphasis on 'the one'.  I didn't hear it till I read it - and then I couldn't not hear it - but the opening horn section riff quotes Miles Davis' 'So What'.

Thanks @Monty nice write up.  Yep i love that track 'Cold Sweat' and coincidentally was listening to Maceo's version yesterday evening.  I have two JB albums on CD (I'm Real, and Live at the Apollo) but i seem to have misplaced both!! ?? so i need to have a proper look in the few spots we have CDs stashed around the house.

< In August 2014 Melbourne-based Minneapolis style funk/jazz band Lake Minnetonka received a housecall from one of our spiritual mentors - in the form of Dr Fink from Prince and the Revolution! We're jammin' on a classic by The Family from back in the day. >

Lake Minnetonka is led by Adam Rudegeair, that's him on the keytar! He presents the wonderful funk infused Black Wax on PBS Mondays 11 - 1pm, essential listening, recommended!

Did someone say funk? It's about time! Being a D.C native funk is in your DNA. So much so we even have our own brand, GoGo. So props to the Godfather, Chuck Brown. As you can see I've been waiting for the thread. You might have soul without funk but there ain't no funk without soul. The horns supply the Power but Rocco, David Garibaldi and Chester Thompson are the Tower. Just played Soul Vaccination; " if you ain't buggin, you still might got the disease." Now that's music that's timeless.15989254850721018382209.thumb.jpg.f9a93f4e4e40a6bdecc8652f9fb83850.jpg15989254012632075806415.thumb.jpg.84ca44836cec362a360b1c614a9aeb05.jpg
