monyx Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 According to online resources my HK AVR-7000 uses: AKM AK4393 24-bit/96k DAC, utilizing delta-sigma technology and a 24-bit, 8x digital filter at the output stage to reduce jitter. I'm thinking of updating my Yamaha CDX-560 cdp to a HK HD990. Or I could use PS3 toslink into receiver. The cdx-560 has no digital out.
Frizzo Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Sorry, I have nothing useful to contribute here but I am having visions of somebody with a soldering iron in one hand and board in the other and copious quantities of solder lingering in the air.
monyx Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 lol well by using i do mean 'in situ' i.e. will new cdp DAC sounds appreciably better than ps3 utilising my receiver DAC via toslink input from ps3.
Juicester Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 having used my cd player to avr with both coax and analogue arrangements (obviously with coax, that AVR Dacs were being used and with analogue it was the CDp's) - the CD player dacs were vastly superior - and I'm talking about a new'ish AVR - Pioneer SC-LX71. As a side note, the CD player smashed the PS3 for CD play back.
davewantsmoore Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 That DAC is not shocking as a chip, but everything depends on the implementation. For SQ, I'd be equally as worried about using the preamp and power amp stages in that old HK receiver. I found that when I slowly replaced a 2008 Denon AVR with seperates, ie. a power, then pre, the a DAC .... I found the biggest improvement by far was not using the preamp in the AVR. What is your Yamaha CDX-560 like? What DAC? ... you might find just using it's analog outputs into a pre/power is better than anything else you're suggesting.
monyx Posted May 21, 2011 Author Posted May 21, 2011 well the 19yo yamaha cd player (no digital out) with some thicker gauge 'video' RCA cabling is better than ps3 toslink into receiver. will audition new cdp, I think that is the point of biggest gain atm - no plans to spend on amp in near future, hk 110 w/pch ±75 amps current drives GS60 very well actually.
syl1101 Posted October 6, 2024 Posted October 6, 2024 (It's an old topic but for anyone lurking around:) Yes the HK AVR7000 has 5 excellent high current power stages fed by a 1kW toroid... Definitely a keeper imo. Also yes, the preamps are so-so, it's best used as a power amp. I have the very similar avr8500 (=avr8000) and used with the main ins (even w/o its volume control) it's spectacular.
