The Fez Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Hi everyone. I'm slowly trying to put together a vintage system. Thought I'd share this video of a vintage system in action from YouTube. If I get close to the quality of this gear I'd be very happy. BTW I'm also looking at Technics components from the 1970's early 1980's. PM me if you have something that may be of interest or needs a new home. Many thanks Fez... 5
skippy124 Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Hi, Thats a nice set up in the youtube video I have the following Technics SU-Z2 Amp - 1980 SA-400 Receiver - 1978 Both in mint condition M33 Cassette deck 1979 ST-8011 Tuner 1979 ST-8044 Tuner 1980-84 The cassette deck and tuners need a clean up, and I haven't got around to servicing the cassette deck as yet (too many pieces in the collection..... too little time...) I might even have an equaliser as well, will check on the weekend. If any of the above is of interest (except the SA400), let me know. Also, I believe that Danter *may* still have a SU-7700 available (needs repair, but that can be organised......) Cheers John
The Fez Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 Nice stuff that Yammy gear. I remember having a Yamaha Tuner and I loved it. Their latest gear is retro looking -- back to the 70's or 80's as well. I love those illuminated square plastic lights on the face. QUOTE=LogicprObe;509166]Most of my gear is Yamaha of this vintage. 2
LogicprObe Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I have the matching tuner. Sounds fantastic. I have 2 of the amps. With four outputs I can switch speakers on and off for the bathroom, kitchen, laundry and my computer room.........or blast the whole lot at once! 1
alekshead Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 I only have one vintage item, a Yamaha CA-810 from about 1977-78. I love it. 11
The Fez Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 That Yammy amp is nice...very nice. Aren't they great looking pieces, and sound good too. Thanks for sharing that. Brings back fond memories of first listening to a "serious system" in the 70's and thought ...s$%t that sounds great. Bigger the better in those days. Probably driving a pair of AR speakers or something with 15" woofer!Need bass, lots of bass!
joz Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 (edited) Speaking of Yamaha My A-960 bought new back in about 1980. Now doing duties in the office. Was mated to a pair of JBL's (which need new surrounds) and to my Yammy PF-800 TT. Edited April 20, 2011 by joz 7
lebowski Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 some of the Technics gear from the late 70's and early 80's is super quality and largely not on the radar of vintage hi-fi collectors. Good choice Fez
ayou2 Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 (edited) I don't have anything currently except this which runs my garage speakers & outdoors. But I used to own this & its tuner. http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/336/1602.html?begin=11 http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/327/1649.html The tuner was blindingly good, lovely warm sound, made AM sound so listenable compared to modern digital. I've had lots of old gear over the years .... love my vintage Edited April 21, 2011 by ayou2 2
The Fez Posted April 21, 2011 Author Posted April 21, 2011 Sliders, knobs, lights all good stuff. Love that amp. I want it! Bet iit still sounds great!

Good choice Fez X2!! I also have a Technics SA-T670 receiver here at the moment (not mine, here for repair), and at 100W per channel it is a definate sleeper.... (built by Fisher and Paykel in NZ .... they had some strict import laws in the 70's) Edit: a pic of the SA-T670 Some pics of the SA400 Edited April 21, 2011 by skippy124 2

bobbly_bob Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I can't get enough of the vintage, spend too much time trolling the internet trying to find the odd rare bits and pieces. Normally try and pick them up, salvage and restore them and usually move them on 6 months later at a loss. I figure its worth it, I would have listened to and owned, if only briefly, about 40 sets of speakers ranging between 20 and 50 years old over the last 4 years. At the moment my pieces are; Luxman RX-103 Thorens TD-126 MkIII DCM TW-1a Bose 601 series 1 Janszen 204-b Beovox 2400 Mission 701 Akai SW-177 DCM TF-250 KEF concertos 2
soundfan Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I wouldn't mind one of these: Denon PMA-S1 circa 1993 which is vintage enough in my opinion. 1
bobbly_bob Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I should have mentioned that this is my ultimate; I owned an Akai 2650 and sold it without fully appreciating what it was. I've been searching for it or one above for the last 4 years now; 1

I must have about 2000 valves in my collection.
The Fez Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 Its been great -- all the discussion about vintage hifi. I appreciate the older hi fi for a number of reasons. Not least of which is the aesthetics. Some of the designs, the look and feel of the units, well they are simply just great to look at. And if you appreciate sound quality there is that element also. The current designs of a lot of hifi tend to be a little bland. However I did see and listen to a "Plessis" solid state and valve integrated amplifier recently. Both units looked refrehingly different. The valve amp was quite nice...and heavy at some 25kg. Anyway enjoing the thread and I'm pretty new to this vintage appreciation, but it really is fun. Like they say A "man (or a woman) has gotta have a hobby"... or 2 or 3!

This 20kg beauty (circa 1976) didn't come cheap, but I'll get every cent back and more if I ever sell it. PeteMac already on the waiting list ; ) Edited April 28, 2011 by Lebowski extra info 4
