Although I will ultimately be letting my ears attempt to decide, I have a "situation" on my audio shelf. Down in the bottom corner sits a 25(?) year old Adcom GFA555ii power amp, fully functional but unused for several years. I am about to take delivery of a Peachtree Grand Pre courtesy of a fellow member. Should I attempt to find a new home for this faithful servant, or is it still a viable or upgradeable proposition as a partner to this pre-amp, driving Duntech Statesmen speakers?

Thanks indeed for that article. Very positive. The available power is substantial and no doubt the Duntechs will be under a very tight rein.? Alas, it seems upgraditiis is always just a component away.

The Adcoms were light on base, not all that extended on treble but shone in the mids. Warm and pronounced, which was why they were, and still are popular with many. I also have one packed away in the back of the cupboard which stands in occasionally  when the prime candidates are in the revolving door.

Thanks for that insight. I have indeed reinstated the Adcom back into the system. I am experiencing NO deficiency of bass whatsoever. Quite the contrary. Do you think the presence of an REL T9i sub woofer might account for that?

Probably. Only a direct comparison with another power amp will let you know. I know when I compared the OAD to the Magtech in my system the increase in base was immediately obvious.

Not sure if the adcom has speaker protection, suggest adding a basic unit if it doesn't, purchased on the bay, probably need a transformer and fuse for under $20-. Consider a basic health check (bias, dc offset, visual) and replace a few parts as needed. Won't be the greatest amp but very listenable...

Thanks. I am probably going to coexist with it for the time being. I am headed to Japan in a few weeks - hence tightening financial belt. I am considering acquisition of Halcro or similar on my return. That should settle matters.
