Fro-Daddy Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 So I've had my entry level 6.2 Sony system for almost 10 years and now that I have a dedicated room I want to upgrade. I'm looking for something 7.2 but have no idea where to start. I always read 'go and have a listen', but to be honest, most sound the same to me and even my old cheap system sounds alright - although I've only used the fronts, centre and subs due to room restrictions. I'm fine with buying second hand, but wouldn't want to spend over $1000. Am I going to get something worth while? Should I keep some components of my current setup and just get new surrounds? I've read that my current speakers might be 4ohm, which may not be ideal for my receiver. Stuff I have: BenQ W2700 projector Yamaha RX V679 receiver Sony Muteki HTDDW1600
Andre28 Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Slightly over $1000, but you may need to spend that to make any upgrade worthwhile. https://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/yamaha-ns-f330-5_1_speaker-pack.htm
hopefullguy Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 (edited) room size? movies/gaming/music percentages you have pj so sound is 50% of the experience.. the sony is a boom box. there is a chance you wont like going to a non boom box sound. if everything sounds the same then go 2nd hand, pick up only so you can test it, as there is less to lose than buying new in your situation. here you go.. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/belrose/speakers/aaron-mirage-surround-speaker-combo/1238663331 Edited January 22, 2020 by hopefullguy
Fro-Daddy Posted January 22, 2020 Author Posted January 22, 2020 Room is about 3.5x4.5m. Will be used solely for movies at the moment.

almikel Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 if you have a dedicated room, start with room treatment and focus on getting the room's bass under control. Bang for buck, room treatment will yield the biggest sound improvement over any other upgrade - by a very large margin. IMHO your existing setup will sound way better if you treat your room compared to a better system in your untreated room. The best speakers in a poor room will not sound that great - reasonable speakers in a great room will sound fantastic. IMHO upgrade electronics last - add treatment 1st, then upgrade speakers. The room makes the biggest impact to the sound you hear, then the speakers, and a long way behind is the electronics. cheers Mike 1
sans Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 I am in a similar situation coming from a Sony system. I am looking at buying some decent speakers to go with the new Yamaha A880. Someone recommended Wharfedale speakers but I like the sound of Q Accoustics range.....too many options
