Dodge Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Hi all. Can anyone answer the following? If I am using the 105d straight into power amps, when playing DVD’s or blu rays, is front L and R signal sent to the balanced outputs? Or only to the 7.1 analog outputs? IE is the balanced output only available when playing CD’s? Thanks All
Midget Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 They are sent to both the 7.1 L/R and the two channel section, however they will be down mixed. The default setting is that they will run full range to the balanced outputs no matter what you have your crossover set to the sub, however you can change This in the settings if you want to high pass to the xlr’s.
Dodge Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Thanks midget. So basically to get the best sound from CD’s and the best surround sound from DVD’s, I need to use both the xlr outputs and the 7.1 L/R outputs for my front speakers?
Midget Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 I will check through the menu system to see if there is a way to change it so just the L and R come through the stereo section from a 7.1 feed. There is a lot you can adjust so there *might* be a way. The default of the 2 channel section is to convert a multi channel feed into a more usable 2.0 or 2.1 for those with only two speakers though. I just put all my money into 2 speakers instead of 5 and I am very happy watching movies with it.
betty boop Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 I dont really understand the question perhaps... the oppo 95/105/205 all have a dedicated stereo L&R outputs both RCA and XLR - all signals are downmixed to these outputs ... dont need to use the 7.1 outs ... if just wanting a 2.0 signal I've owned a 95 and now a 205 and on both have used both L&R XLR and RCA out (note I am not talking of the 7.1 out) when you use either the L&R RCA or XLR out they both by default do a down mix...ie the full sound track is down mixed to L&R 2.0 so that is best used for 2.0 situations ... and i have used this not only for cd but also multichannel audio and also in a 2.1 setup where down mixed all source through the oppo to 2.0
Midget Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Hi Dodge, Okay I had a look and also checked the manual and you can indeed use the stereo section for your L and R speaker while using 7.1. Most of your speakers can be connected to the 7.1 section, however your front L and R can use the better DAC of the stereo section, so you can have the best of both worlds going from movies to CD's. The setting is located on the "Audio Processing" section and at the bottom "Stereo Signal". Change it to Front Left/Right. From the manual: 7. Stereo Signal: To select the audio source that will be processed and sent out through the STEREO and the XLR BALANCED STEREO audio terminals. The available options are: Down-mixed Stereo – The stereo or down-mixed stereo signals are processed and sent out from the dedicated stereo output terminals. Front Left/Right – The original Front Left (FL) and Front Right (FR) signals are sent out from the dedicated stereo output terminals. The purpose is to fully utilise the better DAC hardware originally assigned to the dedicated stereo outputs for customers who prefer multi-channel speakers and do not need the dedicated stereo output or zone 2 output. When this option is selected, the dedicated stereo output ports should be used as the Front outputs of the 7.1ch / 5.1ch / Stereo Audio group. The original FL/FR RCA connectors should not be connected.
Midget Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 This setting is also a quick way to swap between 2 channel full range and 2 channel with crossover enabled. In Down-Mix Stereo it will run full range and in Front Left/Right it will enable the crossover settings (as long as your L and R are set to small).
dbob Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 I connect my Oppo 105 to my Musical Fidelity integrated amp using the balanced outputs for my 2 channel listening. However for movie 5.1/7.1 listening I use the Oppo HDMI output to my a/v receiver and let the a/v receiver do its work in processing all the signal delays, eq etc. My a/v receiver is then connected to my integrated amp in "home theater" bypass mode to drive the L/R mains.
Midget Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 I found this resource from Oppo very helpful as I was sometime using a very powerful amp and wanted to run full range, and other times using an 8 watt SET tube amp and wanted the crossover controls: Using the Dedicated Stereo Outputs in a 2.1 Configuration By default, the dedicated stereo outputs will output full-range 2.0 audio and downmix all multi-channel content into a 2.0 mix, and bass management only applies to the multi-channel analog outputs, which means that the player's Crossover setting will not impact the dedicated stereo outputs. In order to utilize the dedicated stereo outputs in a 2.1 configuration with bass management, you will need to change the Stereo Signal setting under the Setup Menu / Audio Processing to Front Left/Right. This will allow the Speaker Configuration section of the Audio Processing menu to apply to the dedicated stereo outputs: 1. Go to the Setup Menu and select Audio Processing. 2. Select Stereo Signal and change it to Front Left/Right. 3. Go to Speaker Configuration. 4. Set the Downmix Mode to Stereo. 5. Set each of the connected speakers to Small and set the subwoofer to On. 6. Exit Speaker Configuration and set the Crossover setting to whatever your preference is. When the player is configured as detailed above, audio from a source that does not have a dedicated .1 or LFE track will be directed to the subwoofer based on the crossover frequency you select. The Stereo Signal setting applies to both the stereo RCA and balanced XLR outputs. In some cases, you may want to send a full-range audio signal to your stereo speakers in conjunction with using a subwoofer. This idea is commonly referred to as "double bass". You can accomplish this by configuring the player accordingly: 1. Go to the Setup Menu and select Audio Processing. 2. Select Stereo Signal and change it to Down-mixed Stereo. 3. Go to Speaker Configuration. 4. Set all speakers to Small and set the subwoofer to On. 5. Exit Speaker Configuration and set the Crossover setting to whatever your preference is. Note: Bass management is not available when using the USB DAC input. When Stereo Signal is set to Down-mixed Stereo, the settings within Speaker Configuration do not apply to the player's dedicated stereo outputs, which means that setting the speaker sizes to Small in Speaker Configuration will have no impact on the dedicated stereo outputs. However, in order to configure the player to output "double bass", you will still need to set the speaker sizes to Small in Speaker Configuration in order to utilize a subwoofer with content that does not have a dedicated .1 or LFE track. In this case, the Crossover setting is redirecting bass frequencies to the subwoofer that would normally be output from the FL and FR outputs of the multi-channel analog section. As long as Stereo Signal is set to Down-mixed Stereo, setting the speaker sizes to Small in Speaker Configuration will not engage bass management for the dedicated stereo outputs. Bass management will only be active for the multi-channel analog outputs. 1 1
Dodge Posted January 25, 2020 Author Posted January 25, 2020 Thanks so much for that Midget, I think now I have convinced myself the 105 will do what I want it to. thanks again 1

This was particularly helpful as I wanted to double check my setup on the Oppo 105 to ensure I was using the Stereo output properly as I only listen to 2.0 i.e. without a sub-woofer.
