April Snow Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Cannot find the right forum for this question- so am putting my question here I am thinking of framing a Picture Disc I have purchased. I went to Ikea and they have a framed Vinyl 12 inch LP shown on the display floor in their room set ups but none were in stock to buy - I think they may be discontinued? I noticed that JB HiFi also sell a Vinyl display frame but not sure if a picture disc will fit in that (might be only OK for the sleeve) as they look too narrow for an actual vinyl. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have seen a few on Amazon but they are very very expensive and seem to be from the US. I am just wanting one
Guest Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 Yeah might have to be custom for an LP itself. I use these to display sleeves in my media room and change it up regularly: https://www.mightyape.com.au/product/show-listen-lp-flip-frame-black/27802104 1

Price from Mightyape is better then from overseas... Edited January 17, 2020 by Stump

Maybe I will have to look for a deep Shadow Box and try and modify it to sit the LP in somehow. Annoyed Ikea stopped selling them by the looks of it - even checked on "Scum Tree" hahahaa
Demondes Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 (edited) The problem I found with some of those vinyl picture frames is that they are too small. If there is detail at the edges of the cover then they are often obscured by the frame. The wooden ones from JB i bought were like that were terrible, they didnt give the cover room to breathe. They were cheapish though My next solution was I bought some larger HOVSTA IKEA picture frames (40x50cm) (birch, brown, black and maybe white?) $19.99. This has a frame that allows the album to sit back well away from plastic front. It gives the album a look like some of those sports jumpers that people frame, where the glass/plastic doesn't squeeze the item displayed then i bought some sheets of thin cardboard/heavypaper from Officeworks which then push the album of any depth to sit freely in the middle of the frame, with plenty of white space (or other colour dependent on cardboard) around the image. I would post pictures but currently overseas and couldn't find any nice shots on the phone The only complaint I have about the HOVSTA is that a glass panel would look much classier than the cheapish plastic they use. Black and White album covers alternating with coloured ones looks great on the wall. 4 of the ones I have up currently are EDIT: correction I remembered that i placed the picture frame spacer behind the album cover and cardboard. The album was pressed against the plastic so it didn't move. I didn't want to pin or glue the albums to the cardboard from behind, allowing me to not damage the covers and also make for easy swapping Edited January 17, 2020 by Demondes oops a mistake 1
Guest Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 These are the ones I have and free shipping. https://www.artvinyl.com.au/ Only prob is the pricing seems to have crept up a bit. 1
Guest Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 That's pretty cool, hadn't come across those ones before.

Yes they are cool, but they are for vinyl sleeves (and I assume the disc itself stays inside as usual) but I am looking for something to display a Vinyl Picture disc (no sleeve). Like these though if it was on my radar at this time. Edited January 18, 2020 by April Snow

metal beat Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 I bought one of the Flea Market brand frames from JB hifi for around $15. while they are cheap and look OK, they are cheap and flimsy. the Prince hologram does look very cool thou. 1

Yes love the Planet Earth album & the Hologram is great in the vinyl much better then it looks on the CD I might consider doing that too - assume the vinyl is stored elsewhere? I have two copies and this one has the love symbol when you look directly in front and the other has Prince from in front - so the cover is different for the same release.
April Snow Posted January 18, 2020 Author Posted January 18, 2020 Yes, I picked up my vinyl from JB with the 20% off sale and I have both versions on CD too - think one was the UK Free sun paper too........(might have three then............) I really like this album, even if some don't 1
awty Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Just put a screw through the spindle hole and screw it to the wall. How hard can that be. 1 1

Wouldn't having a Picture Disc exposed all the time without being in a frame cause some damage long term? I think I can come up with something better than that - I think I will have to find a deep shadow box and modify.................watch this space (when my Picture Disc arrives from UK that is......)
awty Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 Well my first thought was to use a 2" nail, but I figured a screw might be a bit more fancy. You could use a feather duster to keep dust off. Anyway just a suggestion, I dont own any picture disc's, so not something I have thought about before.
t_mike Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 The single screw idea might not be such a bad idea if you had a perspex place make a disc the same as the record only slightly larger to allow some foam or similar to act as a seal against whatever you screw it to. A gold plated screw would dress it up.

I am also thinking of a deep shadow box and putting a screw in that and then the disc suspended in the framed box with the perspex/glass over it ............

I used an old broken turntable to display a picture disc on the wall (see my avatar). Very cheap, easy and looks great IMO. The disc is held on with tight fitting 45 adapter. The disc got a little dusty, but otherwise fine. Otherwise just frame it up in whatever picutre frame takes your fancy. I'd go for something large enough to fit the cover and the disc...like this. 2

Looks good, the framed one looks lovely too - thinking of that as well for an option - glad to know that having a picture disc out in the open unframed (like your avatar) is OK though .............I just thought they would be better behind glass etc.

Yeah that looks more like my frames from ikea. another handy thing I use is the Velcro mounting tabs rather than screws or nails. The ones with glue that you can peel off the Wall if you decide you don’t need a mount anymore. almost a must when renting 1
