bunkie Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 My 4~5 years old NAD C 316BEE suddenly stopped working today, was working fine last night, it wouldn't power on this morning, not even led light. I know it's entry level amp, but I expect this to last longer, guess I should stay away from NAD?! I have no skill to repair myself, just wondering is it worth to get it serviced(Brisbane region)? how much would this cost? Any suggestion is welcomed :)

I’m in no way a tech - it’s the only thing I could think of when there is no power at all (which is unusual) - only other thing I can think of is a blown power supply (or usually the standby light would be on/flashing etc). Don’t try and diagnose a power supply issue yourself (or update your will beforehand). Edited January 16, 2020 by furtherpale

Guess it left to two option now, it's going to dump or selling as it is.

NAD is a quality brand, sounds like you just got unlucky (just as there is someone with a $99 Sherwood amp from JB hifi that they got in 2003 that’s still running). I’m all for better quality - but poor reliability is not what NAD is known for (I have 3 NAD products in my house, and they are the three cheapest components I have - the bar is set high - and they are 3 quality pieces of kit). mbz Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 The "light show" is fed directly from the rectifier. No power on light points to either faulty lamp, faulty diode brige(unlikely) transformer (unlikely), bad connector contact(unlikely), fuse(checked) faulty power switch or failed safety caps. I would punt on the power switch then the safety caps. Test would be to check for 240Vac at the fuse. Unit is microprocessor controlled so I'm not a huge fan... 1

Thanks for your reply, very informative. Too bad I'm new to diagnose electric faults, how do I check for 240Vac at the fuse? If it's not too difficult, I can borrow or invest a multimeter. BTW, it's probably not faulty lamp, I remember it'd make a click noise when powered on, I don't hear that anymore, so it shouldn't be just the lamp(led).
Guest Muon N' Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 (edited) ............. Never mind, it needs to be properly diagnosed. Edited January 19, 2020 by Muon N'

Internet diagnosis can be so wrong partly due to bs in bs out and partly the "clown" on the internet. Need to work out if it's worth $50 to have someone look at it. 6 hours ago, bunkie said: I remember it'd make a click noise when powered on, I don't hear that anymore Probably the protection relay click after the 4-8 second mute period 6 hours ago, bunkie said: how do I check for 240Vac at the fuse? That question concerns me, points to your skill/experiance level, ok you've said you have none but we are talking about mains (=lethal) voltages. The test is simple, insert black meter probe into any black speaker post, use red meter probe to test each side of the fuse, select AC volts 500-750 volts scale. Hopefully you know someone that can do this test for you. The switch is just a guess based on your inputs which may be incomplete so problem could be anywhere hence the need for a proper diagnosis etc...
