5L15 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Hopefully this is the correct forum for this, anyway while I was being dragged around Kmart shopping for kids birthday gifts I spotted this in the sports section and the first thing I thought was speaker stands in the man cave for the classic 60’s, 70’s, 80’s 3 way speakers with 10-15 inch bass drivers. They are definitely sturdy enough.
surprisetech Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Good thinking. Angled legs provide good stability. Any holes in the steel tubing that an audiophile could use to fill them with sand?! While I was building my current main speakers, I used this pair of cheap and cheerful bamboo stools in the loungeroom with my Richter Merlins for about 6 months. It pays to think outside the box.

I didn’t get a good look at them as they are wrapped and I was in a semi zombie state but I was thinking that maybe you could drill a hole from the bottom and fill’em with sand or buckshot etc and use a screw to seal. I must say that I like your wood working skills, simple yet handsome. Would you be filling in the screw heads with dowel or keeping it as is? Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing Yes, they don't look like they would be too difficult to modify. I can't take any credit for the wood working skills on the bamboo stools. They were purchased as a flat-pack on e-bay and only had to be assembled. I never bothered filling the screw recesses. I had them oriented 90deg, so the screw heads were on the sides. When the new speakers were completed, these got stowed away for a while, then eventually went to the Salvos. 1

These look like they could be good speaker stands. A look on the Kmart website said they have "just landed", and come in a small for $29 and medium for #39. https://www.kmart.com.au/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchDisplay?searchTerm=jump+box I have filled tubular steel with sand in the past. I dried the sand in the oven first, so there was no moisture to promote mold or rust. Tapped the sides of the tubes when filling so the sand settled to get maximum quantity in. Before sealing the hole, I poured pva glue in the hole and mixed it with the sand around the input hole. My thinking was that if I didn't seal the hole perfectly the PVA would hold the grains in the area so I wouldn't have a small leak. Just need to leave a cavity to accommodate the hole-filling device. I just wish that I could have space for large speakers.... 1
