Item: Intel NUC 8i5BEH with Roon ROCK
Location: Newport 2106
Price: $500, buyer pays shipping if needed
Item Condition: Excellent, has had little use
Reason for selling: I don't need this equipment any more and am selling to raise funds for RFS
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank transfer. Can't do Paypal on these, sorry.
Extra Info:

100% of proceeds from sale of this item will be sent to the NSW RFS using this link.

This is an EOI for an Intel NUC set up with Roon ROCK. It’s an EOI because it’s some work to set it up and I’d prefer to know there is a likely buyer before spending the time.

This is:

  1. Intel NUC 8i5BEH, date of manufacture March 2019
  2. Crucial 8GB RAM
  3. Samsung 128 GB PM961 NVMe SSD (OEM equivalent of 960 EVO)
  4. Roon ROCK installed and ready to go

The 8i5 NUC is the model between Roon’s “small” (8i3) and “large” (8i7) library recommendation at the link above. Being quad core the 8i5 is much closer to the 8i7 in performance. The NUC has had little use since I purchased it in June 2019. I’ve used to try out various Linux desktops (and ROCK). BTW I'm still running ROCK but in a more complicated virtualization environment.

The NVMe SSD I'll put in it is the newest one I have, it's been in a small server I set up about three weeks ago, so has had hardly any use. I'll put the SMART data in a post below.

You will of course need your own Roon subscription. If you haven’t used Roon before, I strongly recommend running the free trial on your own laptop/desktop before committing to buying dedicated hardware for it.  If you have any doubts or questions please just ask in this thread.

I’m happy to spend time on the phone to help you set it up after receiving it. (It should be straightforward but it is after all networked computer equipment...) If there’s a problem you can return it for a refund but because of the nature of the sale I ask that this be done within 7 days after receiving it. If all is good I'll add your payment to the pool I will send to the RFS.

For transparency, your payment is a purchase not a donation, you can't claim it as a tax deduction.

Please ask any questions in this thread and reserve PMs to arrange an actual purchase. I'm happy to chat on the phone, just send your number. Thank you :)

Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.

(Sorry about carp flash photos, hopefully you can see it's in exc cond)

Here be some info on music storage options for ROCK. Note that the NUC as described above doesn't include music storage, just the system drive.

  1. Plug an external USB drive into it. Then in the Roon settings you add this drive to your library. This way you can preload all the music files on the drive if you like.
  2. Put a drive into the NUC. It will take up to a 9mm drive, which means max 2TB. On the ROCK web interface, format the drive, then in the Roon interface, enable internal storage. ROCK publishes the drive as a network share, so you can then drag and drop music files onto it from your computer. (Hopefully I remembered that all correctly.)
  3. If you have music files already on a network share (e.g. shared folder from a computer, NAS), you can add this to the Roon Library in the Roon settings.

HTH :)
