I've just purchased a Project Essential 3 with a built in phono stage, and I'm wondering if I need a preamp or equaliser to compensate for the lack of bass in many vinyl mixes?

Thanks for your help :)

Here is a link to the manual    https://www.project-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Manual_Essential-III-FlexiRange.pdf

There appears to be a switch for line out or phono Out , meaning you can either use the turntables built in RIAA stage and preamp

in which case you would connect to a line level input on your amplifier,   or if set to phono out you can use a external amplifiers phono stage.

Hope that helps

The built in "phono stage" is all you need to get the proper amount of bass.  It will contain an RIAA curve equaliser, which will render the frequency response of the signal from the cartridge flat, and boost it to normal line levels.

If you still don't have enough bass, either play different records, or get a line preamp with tone controls , or maybe a graphic equaliser.

Ensure the tone arm and cart are weighted correctly. This tends to be the first thing I see setup incorrectly when there is a lack of bass.
