Kiwi_steve Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place when deciding between both of these players. The oppo is a player with such raved reviews regarding quality, the dacs and just overall awesomeness. However the same goes with the Panasonic, the chip, tone mapping and again, just overall awesomeness. Couple things to note: 1, I have an LG 55b7 oled, so the tone mapping from the Panasonic would be advantageous 2, I won't be using it for audio, exclusively for 4k blurays. Any input would be appreciated.
betty boop Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 tough call.... I have the 205 and ub9000 id have to say in usability and overall experience in using the oppo is just better. the remote, display... onscreen info. region select-ability with blu-ray. the panasonic is still a very accomplished player. the tone mapping is handy indeed if display doesnt have it....also something i suspect continue to be supported with updates... though not sure we seen one of those for a while.... but it does work.
groovem Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 Can you even still buy the Oppo? You know they stopped production?
Kiwi_steve Posted January 5, 2020 Author Posted January 5, 2020 You can't, not from new as far as I'm awear. But I have one I can get a hold of, but I'm ton between the 203 and the ub9000

cwt Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 Same answer as I gave recently Steve ; discount the panas tone mapping with the LG if you can get the oppo without the extortionist prices some are asking [ if no new firmwares for drm laced titles is ok ? ]

Are you saying the oppo would be better? I use dolby vision if it available, but most movies are standard hdr. Do you mean use the lgs tone mapping that's inbuilt? Yeah I have the ability to get the oppo at a good price, cheaper than the Panasonic. What's drm laced updates?

Yeah I have the ability to get the oppo at a good price, cheaper than the Panasonic. What's drm laced updates? Its a reference to letting the pana do the hdr tone mapping or the LG Steve . As you say most are standard hdr10 but with the LG it can apply active scene by scene mapping to that hdr10 while the pana can only manage fixed hdr10 [ sets a hdr tone map based on the whole disc -not scene by scene] . The oppo has the advantage of being a universal player and a good file player ; DRM laced updates is a reference to Hollywood changing the ways discs are authored [ they once decided to give branching titles to the bitstreams to frustrate making copies] . Its for reasons like this that oppo and others sometimes have to give out new firmwares so particular titles can even play [problematic with a player in the oppo's position . This is what betty boop was referring to as the pana while not as good as the oppo used to be with new firmwares is still current .. You can always convert problem discs to files for problem titles as a workaround if any surface ; a small risk anyway imho If you can get one cheaper than the pana Ide run the risk ; oppo's are also very conducive with their circuitry to modifications ; no surprise to see the options out there 1
TerryO Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 (edited) TV’s come and go with upgrades, but even though the 203/205’s stopped being built well over a year ago to date there is no new player that does the same job as well for anything near the price. In three or four years time you more than likely will have a new TV but chances are people will still be talking about the good old days when the OPPO 203/205 universal players were available and so affordable. My bet is the 203/205’s will still be very sort after for years to come. Chances are by then the Pana will considered to be just another player that didn’t measure up to the Oppo. cheers Terry Edited January 7, 2020 by TerryO 3
