I some time ago had an insurance claim due to water damage and lost my HT speakers(nothing special). They replaced them with some Wharfedale AT400, Xarus center, and Atlantic 200 rears (horrible build quality). They are/were powered by a Onkyo TX-NR676E receiver.  I was never able to make them sound good, or anything I was happy with. So decided to downsize and move to a soundbar (Samsung q90r)while good - its no replacement for an "actual" speaker setup.

Im considering going back to the Onkyo on buy another speaker pack - I have a Dali Zenzor 12e sub Im happy with and purchase to begin with a 5 speaker pack but want some advice in what would suit the receiver and 6x4 room. Im not wanting to spend more than $1500-2000, lower the better.

Advice much appreciated.

seeing in vic, i would visit a place like selby, can pick up some krix speakers am sure within budget and skipping on the sub if happy with that.

another option pop into audio trends if closer to you.

plenty other retailers too will find plenty with all sorts of packages.

if buying new is too expensive still ... look second hand .... usually can pick up stuff in budget worth about twice going rate, given discount 2nd hand. - check out the classifieds

Trawl the classifieds - new at this budget will always be a compromise. I'd personally try to put together a good 2.1 over a cheaper multi-channel

is anything in they Yamaha lineup worth considering. I suggest this as I can get good pricing on this through work. I also can get my hands on KEF - but think this might be getting out of my budget. Thoughts?

the first link is $550 more if buying from eastwood hifi who usually have good pricing..

the other package (6500) about even with eastwoods so nothing special

but a bit confused.. you have 1 sub so why a package with 2.. you have the onkyo so why change the avr?.. i thought you just wanted some speakers... if so look/inspect/test some local speakers on gumtree and pocket the difference

I wouldn't go near that level of Yamaha speakers. The Q Acoustics mentioned earlier wipe the floor with the Yamaha.

oh ok.. well in theory the yammy rxv1085 is a step up from the onkyo you have... but is it really? 7.2 vs 7.2.. preouts to ad external amps= both limited... neither can process more channels than they provide amplification for.. so.

you might not like the way the yammy operates/OSD etc if you already like the onkyo

as for the yammy speakers.. this is subjective but a lot of people seem to like them as good value for money. i would feel they are better than what you have for sure. i reckon avrs will always be on special. i would look at the speakers first

all good if op has a budget of $2600 plus if he decides he does want an avr change..

at $1878 new just for the floor standers the Q's should beat the yammy

yeah thought the link of $3.5k a bit odd so that's why I mentioned the Qs

the yamaha speakers is the weakness here, $3,600 is a lot of money ...

either way, i would be wanting to listen to what buying to decide and explore some available options ...

if op is considering the yammys (and his money his choice) look and listen, 2nd hand they are quite cheaply priced.. ie cash converters parramatta recently had a full set of yammy 2x777 (the bigger 8" woofers) /2x 444/ 4x333 +515 sub for $600

Yamaha speakers are awful (I know from experience of buying them in my first home theatre setup).   Regreted the purchase almost from day 1.  With a budget of $1500 to $2000 you won't get much that is any good.  Better to buy a good set of stereo speakers (Dynaudio Emit M20's perhaps) plus perhaps a cheap sub and decent centre and start with a 3.1 setup.   The better quality stereo speakers will form the basis of a longer term purchase.  Purchasing second hand will obviously get you much better value than purchasing new.
