Don't like how he's positioned the KEF's. Boxed in and unable to breathe. The Yammies are positioned better and not directly coupled to the "Wooden" floor creating the boxiness colouration in the upper bass of the KEF's. I had exactly this pair of Yammies and used to sell the KEF's.

No need for a comparison like this. They both glowed in their own dimension and colouration. I bought my mint Timber NS1000's back in the day for $350. Gave them to my eldest back in the 90's driven by a Hafler Pre/Power. I would of spent $500 for a pair of the 104.2's back then. but I was by then using ESL63's and Maggie 2.5's.

Funny, I just saw the Utube comments and it looks like everyone had a different opinion to me :afro:

Impossible to tell much from the vague sound other than one is warmer sounding (Kef) and the other (NS1000) less so.

Generally pointless exercise as it misses out what each can really sound like in reality.

Well I enjoyed it. Thanks Willmax.

I don't mind this video either while I think that the speakers being in that position isn't ideal they would almost certainly benefit from being placed away from the back wall and given room to breathe.

What it does give is an idea how different they sound there are plenty of threads asking the question about the difference between "warm" or "accurate" sound however you want to describe it, in a "real world situation" the video does portray this quite well, not all of us are lucky enough to have a dedicated listening room or man cave where we can do as we please.

I agree with Al M. that it is a pointless exercise.Without level matching and appropriate positioning and using an amplifier that suits each speaker it is worse than useless because it is likely to misrepresent the potential sound quality. All this is made worse by using a crappy old recording that is probably not even recorded in stereo.A bit like test driving a car in a car park.

Happy New Year fellow SNA members! (a bit late as I was away for a while)

Thank you for all the feedback and support comments here, I know my listening room is not perfect, actually far from it, but it is what it is and I try to make the best and have fun within the constraints of what I have.

I enjoy doing these videos and will continue to do so, as I believe there are people out there who also enjoy it as well.

On a side note, I would love to see other members showing their appropriately positioned and suitably matched amplifier/speaker videos, that would be quite something actually, as I have not seen many members willing to do so on platforms like YouTube. If you are out there please do let us know!

I really like your comparison ''Test driving a car in a car park'. But, seriously how many of us get chance to test drive cars in a track and compare.... which will reveal the true potential of a car rather than driving on normal road?! How many of us are fortunate enough to have a dedicated listening room with proper room acoustic treatment?!

Test driving a car in a car park also sometimes gives some sort of idea to someone who are capable of extracting it to some extend from a limited space available. In my opinion, the same is applicable here also. It won't be representing the true potential of both the speakers and there are a huge number of factors to do with that. But it will definitely represent the tone character of both the speakers which will be helpful to a number of people.

I think we should appreciate his effort and time he spent to make this video, and see what we can extract from it..... together with identifying the limitations. :)

Good job @Willmax keep going ....

What a dramatic difference in the sound of the two speaker, at that same volume setting and with that same amp, the Yamaha's sound so so thin in comparison to the KEF's.

But that's the crunch, matching volume and suitable amplification, I wonder how it would be if the Yamaha's were being driven with a nice 50w tube integrated, likely a very different story.

Wow, what an incredible night and day difference. The

NS1000 sounded really poorly reproduced, almost like a clock radio. Like the skeleton of sound without the flesh filling it in. The KEF's in comparison were rich and beautiful sounding with a lifelike presentation. Then again from what I know of the NS1000's they're brutally revealing so I believe this is just revealing a mismatch with the source and amp. This will be more critical to getting the best from those speakers. From what I heard in this video I suspect the NS1000 might benefit from a nice 50WPC tube amp. It would address some of it's shortcomings. The KEF on the other hand would probably do poorly with tubes though you never really know until you try it.

I remember, NS1000/NS1000M were my dream speakers once. Now I'm not a huge fan of those speakers. But audio is always different to different ears so I respect the view of people who love those speakers.

I have had a chance to compare NS1000M speaker against a good number of other speakers in parallel, and my opinion remained the same. Exactly as mentioned by few above, 'There is no flesh in the sound'.

You didn’t get around to having the NS1000’s with the right amplifier then it would seem.
When paired correctly they are the gateway to true high end sound. Without the cost and the associated audio drama’s.
There are plenty of people (even on this website) that have high end, almost money-no-object systems who still will not sell their NS1000’s.

This proves that reality is far more strange than fiction.

And reality it is!

......and how very odd indeed is that particular instance of reality.

I have tried my level best to like them...

Gone through all different experiments than you could imagine. For me,  they are nothing special.

Also,  I don't think any famous studios used NS1000M,  but I know hell lot of people who used NS10 as near field studio monitors.

Again, not the right ones.

If your point is to say that the NS10’s are somehow better than the NS1000M’s just by industry recognition you’ve missed the point. They have far greater failings as a speaker than the NS1000’s ever will.

I didn't say NS10 is better than NS1000M,  different speakers.

For me NS1000M/NS1000 is just an average speaker and I won't buy another one ever in my life. Like I said they were never used in any of the famous studios as far as I know.

The NS10 is used in studios for a comparison speaker, not to mix on.

They switch over to them and listen for any bad imbalances as they are like an industry standard for all the crap speakers that people use in their homes etc.

Before the NS10 these were like the 'industry standard' https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/auratone-5c-super-sound-cube and some still swear by them!

Can you provide some examples of your favorite amps to pair with the NS-1000?

I enjoy listening to my NS-1000 from time to time, particularly with my Kenwood L1000 Power/Preamp combo, and former Consonance Cyber 100 integrated valve amplifier with KT150 tubes.

I have not heard that model of KEF but had the recent pleasure of listening to a stock NS1000.

The NS1000 (with room and electronics) was quite something.

I will hold off from buying any more hifi as i'm out of room (bigtime).  Despite not having the room to properly stage them and against domestic ideology, if anyone is planning on getting rid of their NS1000 in the pay it forward section, pls PM me.  :D
